How loud is your PS3?

sorry but you seem to argue loads recently especially in the GTA thread yesterday, if im overeacting my bad, im suffering.

lets not go there. nothing i said in that thread was made up and i proved it all. its up for people to decide how to take it and of corse, some people atc like children. im sorry you're suffering but there's no need for that. much like there was no need for questioning my mental health in that thread, either (children).

lets keep it on topic and away from 'my stereo is so loud (all the time?) that i cant hear it anyway'.

Mine is virtually silent for the most part but i can hear the fans speed up after an hr or so watching dvd/playing games. Still not louder than my pc/360 tho. Kicks out a lot of heat and if i place my hand on the curved top of it (fingerprint alert!!) i can actually feel individual hotspots.

i questioned your health? i just left the other thread alone.

Cut it out guys/gals please.
Its not really constructive.
Think happy thoughts! :).:p.

I'll see what it does when i boot it up when i get in from work, sound wise. :).

well, i can measure mine from about 6 inches. its sitting at 52db or so and i cant hear it from where i sit @ just over 7ft. i got a dvd on now, ill measure it again when the fan kicks in

edit: 52 db at idle, not 56.

fans kicked in now.... about 58db. off the scale where i sit so <50db. its only really there because of the pitch of the fan, not the loudness so much.

Upscaling a DVD seems to get it at its loudest.

yeah thats right. gta does as well, but for some reason upscaling seems to do it much quicker, more so with this recent update. i dont really notice it playing games anyway as i do have the sound on. its worse with dvd's because there are more quiet passages. but right now im sitting in silence so yeah, its the only sound im hearing right now lol.

to put this in to some sort of perspective, holding the meter the same distance from my keyboard and typing as i normally would shows 57db. its a logi diNovo, so not exactly 'loud'.

mines inaudible. 5+ hours of constant gaming and the fans never change. i have yet to test uoscaling dvds though and i hear thats the mean culprit of speeding up of the fans

My new (GTA launch day) PS3 seems to use 2 speeds on its fan. In the XMB it is almost totally silent. When I play a game or watch a medium+ res video the fan speeds up, but it's still pretty much inaudible over the sound of whatever it is I'm playing/watching. Even with the TV on mute it's hard to hear it. It's not upscaled anything yet, though I'm getting a HDTV on Thursday so will see if it gets louder then. Don't think it will though.

By far the loudest thing about it is the drive. When accessing a Blu-ray it's quite loud, though it's a lot quieter when reading a DVD or CD, which is strange! I guess they use a different laser or something. It's not always audible, though it is if it does it while a game is loading (ie making no sound).

For 40GB owners who want to hear just how loud it can be, turn your PS3 off with the switch at the back, hold the eject button then flip the switch on. Cover your ears! Wait a few secs and it beeps, the light flashes red and you can turn it off/on back to normal. It's a test and totally safe. Apparently clears dust out too! :)

Ok, if you say so, you've been going on and on in that thread trying to prove your point when there was actually nothing to prove, I consistently said in that thread from the beginning it comes down to personal preference, I was being very fair, but you couldn't accept that, you want everyone to believe that your version of the game is factually the best based on your very big 40" TV, because all of us lower people down here are using 14inch crts, we don't have all the expensive reference audio/video gear you have , I suppose that's why you feel that your an authority on image quality these days,

Now I forgot about last night but I come in here and find you taking the mick out of another member again trying to big yourself up and then you have the audacity to go on and say that you "proved it all" in the GTA thread, now I'm saying this as a fellow member, I've enjoyed reading your posts for as long as I can remember, you've always been fair and objective, but recently you've changed your posting style, you become arrogant and closed minded, barely open to anyone else's opinion other than your own, of course this is only imo, look end of the day I never hate anyone on here, even people that I argue/debate with.

guys, I genuinely apologise for taking the thread off topic but I just needed to say that.

On topic/

Originally when I brought my first PS3 it was the 60gb pack, although it was very quiet you could definitely hear the fans whirring, and it was a whirr rather than a whoosh :p, my new 40gb on the other-hand is allot quieter, in the day time the only time you can hear it is by putting your ear next to it, at night when my place is silent you can here it from about 8 yards away, still only a silent hum though, and thats usually after it's been on for a long duration.

My guess is (and it's only a guess) it's because the PS3 isn't doing any hardware scaling atm, instead it's probably using few of the SPEs on the Cell and doing the scaling via software, if this is true then it will put allot more strain on the system and therefor cause the fans to step up sooner.

My 60GB US model is quite loud under load (still quieter than Xbox though), my newer 40GB one is barely audible at all.

That's why I always recommend 40GB model over 60GB it's far less intrusive noisewise, if you want BC best to buy a separate PS2 anyway.

60gb launch - Louder than my 360 after half an hour or so..
Both are louder than my PC rig that has 7 x 120mm and 4 x 80mm fans. God bless mountain mods! if only I could get my ps3 and 360 to fit in there!
