How many of you game with crossfire?

Run a 5970 and I love it. Be aware though that ATI cards do seem to have more "character" than nVidias (by which I mean you will probably need to spend more time fiddling to get things working nice!).

Running 10.10e's still at the moment as newer drivers havn't been playing nice with my setup.

use a 4870X2 so don't really have much a choice! :) seems fine for most games, some though don't seem to have any real benefits, though crysis seems to see improvements with multi-GPU enabled. depends on drivers to be honest though, sometimes they can be ropey to say the least!

I'm sorry but am I missing something here. I have a single 4870x2 but don't recall setting any crossfire settings. Should I be doing so? Are they just automatically enabled in the ATI settings?

If I could squeeze more performance out of this card, I would be a happy man although I would inherit the title of noob of the century for running a card under powered for so long. :)

I never had any major issues with my 4870x2, a few games that took ATI some time to fully support but you could easily make it run in single mode by disabling Cat AI and it was still no slouch.

Got a 2nd 6950 arriving today yay! :)

Since the card has two gpu's on one board it is already 'ready to go' once installed, so crossfire is automatic. In CCC if you check the box which says 'disable catalyst a.i.' then you would be turning off one of the gpu's. Try running a game while using fraps and alternating between that setting, and then watch the frame rate change.

So I would have to actively disable a feature on the card to see a drop in performance, not actively enable to improve?

Just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something that I should have had enabled all along. :)

Correct. If you do not check the box then you have crossfire enabled.

Hope you don't mind me saying... I would try and overclock that cpu to at least 3.0Ghz if possible. It'll need to be running faster to keep up with your 4870X2.

Have tried a few guides to overclock it and just can't get it stable sadly. :(

I have a 5870 and was wondering....to save some dough, would it be wise to get a 5850 and clock it up to 5870 standards for crossfire?

That's very unlucky. Oh well, the bottom line is if you're getting good enough performance then that's all that matters.

Performance is ok I guess but would always love more. :)

Can't really afford a rebuild and not sure I trust the second hand market for a CPU.

I prefer to play games in a window if at all possible, I just like being able to pause now and again (or stop for example like in an MMO ) to read forums/chat to friends, video in another screen etc. However on crossfire (4870x2's "internal") it will only use one core in window mode.

I did not know this until after I bought it, so I assume it's the same for all crossfire and sli alike, so I'd prefer one powerful card that can do to job. Which will be my future purchase.

I wasn't aware of that, it would be interesting to see if it's confirmed by others.
I use 2 monitors, and run my games in full screen on the primary monitor, then ALT+TAB out to my browser or chat window on the other screen if I need to. I haven't seen any problems with this.

Yeah I hate the delay some games have alt tabbing most are quick, some aren't, but it can't beat the instantaneous switch in window mode.

It is confirmed just google it, some rumours around of a "fix" but all from dodgy places so don't bother. Would be nice if something did work!

I'm running on a 3870x2 - internal crossfire lol. I'm still getting good fps in games with high detail so I'm happy. Also when BF3 is released I will probably buy the AMD 6990 X2.

What's the difference between reference and non reference?

Reference means it's built exactly to the specification originally designed by ATI/Nvidia.

Non reference means that manufacturers have made changes to the original spec, usually these will be improvements to the design, mainly in the form of improved heatsink/fan combinations. One such example is the MSI 5850 linked on the previous page which has a much larger heatpipe based heatsink with dual fans, as opposed to the reference designs more traditional approach and a single fan.
