How many planets?

If you count pluto then you have to include the bigger thing and that makes it at least 10 as I am sure we would find some bigger ones slighter further out as well.

In retrospect, if it were genuinely Captain Kirk asking this question it puts the entire integrity of Starfleet into question.

I got it right, so I think the Enterprise is in safe hands (for now). Hey, you never know, this may come up in a pub quiz one day and you will all be thanking me!

why was pluto demoted? was it said to be gas?

Too small, classed as a dwarf planet now.

Reason they changed it is because they found Eris, which is 3x further out than Pluto and bigger, so would have been the '10th planet', and with the chances of finding more and more of these objects the list of planets they decided to reclassify the smaller ones to dwarf planets.

It's not and the "other" is called 2003UB13 or Xena(after the warrior princess in the television series) I think has been renamed to Areis.

Pluto is an ice object, not gas.
