How many Processes on boot?

You're going to need to provide more information that that.. which OS, 32/64 bit, a list of the processes (screenshot of taskmanager or tasklist from command prompt) etc. If you're on Vista/Windows 7 they aim to use all your free memory rather than leave it wasted doing nothing.

I have about 100 on startup on Windows 7 64-bit so I'm sure 70 is fine.

Sorry should have said its Win7 64bit

Only reason I brought it up was becuae when using CS5 recently I have had a message coming saying in running low on memory etc etc, and it would advise to close it down.

I have 4 gb of OCZ Reaper, wondering if I should get more now, tho dont think I have the space for those huge heat sinks!

Also have an SSD so it boots up just fine, tho thinking about it I do have the CS5 Creative suite installed..so that prob about 10 processes right there.

Went thru the list and ticked off anything I dont need..but think I need the rest of them.

I've got about 50-60 on an XP and Win7 64 bit machine (I like to keep things tidy), personally anything above 80 after a boot would have me wondering wtf is running.

Im currently running 60 Processes with IE9 with Several Tabs taking up 7 of them and Logitech Drivers taking up another 3 :P

Only using 1.35GB out of 4GB with all these tabs open on Windows 7 64Bit :P

I usually idle on Desktop around 1GB usage. Not looked at Processes right enough but i would imagine it would be around 53 taking of Browsers.

I think I discovered my Low Memory problem...I Was using Photoshop CS5 32bit, so im guessing it give the warning as its not able to use all the ram available.

WHich is abboying as the 32bit is able to load all of my plugins...whilst my 64 version might work better but cant recognice the old filter files.

A possible reason for this is because you're hitting the system commit limit, which is normally due to either a process leaking private virtual memory or due to the paging file being too small for the workload which you're running.

It's not really insane at all, gone are the days of having less processes = Better. Modern OS + Modern Hardware = Careface.

Resources are supposed to be allocated and at the ready at all times, unlike in the XP days where they were sitting around idling..."free".

It's worth noting that in Windows XP, memory isn't necessary sitting their doing nothing. It still tries to make good use of memory by using it for file cache so therefore, there would have still been pages of memory on the standby page list. The difference between Windows XP and later operating systems, such as Windows Vista and Windows 7, is that they take a proactive approach and are more intelligent in handling physical memory, due to SuperFetch and the prioritised standby paging lists.

Right now I have 27 processes running. PC has been on for several hours, and this includes sound drivers, Xfire, Teamspeak, Mouse drivers, firefox and Hardware Monitor.

I have 66, with a number of applications open. I would classify 70 on boot as quite a lot - but I'm quite stingy in terms of what I run in the background. Either way, having lots of processes running won't slow your machine down in itself - one rogue process which uses lots of RAM and CPU is worse than 50 background processes using virtually no resources. So long as you have enough RAM to do what you need to do, and your machine doesn't use excessive CPU when idle, then it's not a problem.

How did you manage to Cut it to 27? Boot must be almost instant :P

I have about 36 processes running at startup on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and on usage obviously the processes increase after a length of time depending on how many programs etc I use.

It is quite easy cut how many processes if you limit how many programs you really need running at startup and tweaking the windows services.

Apart from Logitech Setpoint nothing starts up with my computer. Not really tweaked any services as of yet, but which would you reccomend?
