I think people are failing to distinguish the difference between good friends and friends they see often. I have plenty of friends but you can only see so many when you are busy. The real test is the 'BBQ test'.
Who would you invite from all over the country to have a summer BBQ with? You would only invite you best friends to such an event, assuming you are not still at school and you have the obligation of putting on a party for everyone.
With the BBQ test (excluding significant others), I would invite 25 friends. These I consider to be my good friends, regardless of how often I see them. These are my 'true' friends.
