How Much BILLS?!

After seeing quite a few threads here on how people have got ripped off, i would also suggest that all payments are put into a shared account where it's all one month (possibly 2) in advance at least, stops the old 'people disappearing and leaving the rest to foot the bill' saga.

IN all fairness, my sticking point was the rent, even I can see that bills split between all the occupants is not only fair, but correct.

In situations like these I've always dealt with utlities split equally between everyone.

Rent is split on the basis that the room being shared pays more overall, with the extra amount to reflect the additional tenant's usage of the communal areas and the extra pressure/inconvenience this places on the remaining tenants (things like less space in communal areas, less fridge space, bathroom usage, things like that).

I think we had it so there was 4 of us paying:

£350
£350
£350
£300

When the 5th person moved in, it went to

£400 (shared room)
£335
£335
£280

Or there and thereabouts.

I'm glad we have a one off utility charge at the beginning of the year for our flat, £250 each for everything including internet, job done. I think it's fair that utilities are split between all occupants.

when i lived with 3 mates in my 3rd year at uni we split the bills 3 ways but the rent was skewed slightly as they had both graduated the year before me so were willing to pay a bit more to get a nicer place so i think it worked out 50, 55 and 60 quid a week rent.

You could install a swipe card system for each room, and then divide the rental up pro-rata for time spent in each room, with additional weighting depending on the usefulness of each room, and further weighting based on the square footage of the room in question divided by the occupancy of the room at the time the person enters it.

Or you could just discuss it with them, and come to an agreement like adults do.
