how much do you reckon a taxi driver makes?

Depends on the taxi driver and location of course.

I would say around £400 a week after fuel now for most. A few years ago when costs were lower, you could easily take home around £1k a week after costs if you put in 40 - 50 hours (not anymore of course, unless you're extremely lucky or live in an area which is taxi dependant or rich).

A mate was yesterday quoted £350 for the ~270 mile trip from Belfast to Shannon airport in Cork.

Say maybe £50 of diesel for the 550 or so miles, that's an easy £300 for a days work.

has your mate heard of a train or a bus? no taxi driver gets £350 fares every day. its a once in a lifetime thing unless they drive a limo.

Lets not forget here income tax! Nobody has mentioned that, although if any of them declare near 100% of what they take i would be staggered as its all cash. I would bet mosy drivers thats dont work for afirm have bundles under the kids matress?

My mum and step dad both make more or less £1,000 a week each.

Before or after costs?

Depends very much on location, hours, the jobs you get, whether you're self-employed, and so forth.

For example, around here a Heathrow/Gatwick job is a nice little earner (especially if it's Sunday/early/late) and all the drivers would go for them if they could (they operate a rota), but fighting traffic in town isn't so great, and sitting on the rank is obviously worse.

A friend of mine is a taxi driver and he lives extremely well, nice house, new motorhome, BMW X5. He says it's the contracts he has with the council that make a difference.

no idea. Charlie on eastenders always looks a bit scruffy - he's had the same coat for 8 years and keeps getting rejected by peggie mitchel so i would say its a mugs game.

times have changed anyway - any tosh with a sat nav can do it these days.

as ocuks resident taxi driver i thought i better add my 2p

really depends on location etc but i'll give you a rough idea of costs etc for me in Glasgow

lots of rules and regs up here vehicles no older than 7 yr old etc etc so you have to beear that in mind

vehicle plating is £160 pa drivers badge is £55 pa
my radios comes in at £119 a week and it works out at grand a year per car in insurance

obviously not going to discuss my own income but as a general rule a driver working full time will make £100 a day after costs monday to thursday £150-200 on a friday more if you work nightshift and as a general rule £200 on a saturday dayshift or anything up to £300 and beyond on a nightshift sundays can be funny and are mainly affected by football being on etc.

its a funny profession as your earnings rise exponentially

for example if i were to work 30 hours i'd have 30 hours takings minus all costs radio insurance vehicle etc etc if i work 40 hours i'd have the same expenses plus a bit extra in fuel but an extra 10 hours of income, its not unknown for some drivers up here to be hitting 90-100 hours a week and making very good money.

then theres always the possibilities for renting vehicles out as i do myself. going rate up here for a car only is £150 a week fully insured and maintained or similar with a radio and double shifted with a second driver so a car can pull you in £400 a week minus radio fees. if you want any more information e-mail in trust but yes its a difficult sometimes horrible job but its easy to get into and easy to make money if you want to put the hours in. you have unlimited earning potential.

as for the big hires you'd be surprised how often it happens, personally i cover a lot of council and social work contract although this is starting to be scrutinised with the recession and all biting budgets but theres still plenty of it there. example of work i would take on education dept will request a taxi to take kids to school normally with an escort(social work type not sex type- although you do see a few of them) anyhting from £50-150 a day for a 2 run per day job (ie school and back) plenty of airport work for us glasgow and prestwick and lots of other "account" work

Doing a grand a week always sounds good, but if you're working 100 hours a week you could equally say that a taxi driver pulls in 10 quid an hour which isn't quite as impressive :-P

depends how erm creative your accountant is :)

bear in mind with self employment theres a lot of fudging for those with a good number cruncher

national insurance contributions are approx £3 a week and tax is whatever you want it to b

I used to work in IT earning about 42k per year, was made redundant about a year ago and decided to do some minicab work until I find myself another IT job. With mini cabing I was driving a E class Merc, did six days per week, 7am till 5/6pm, keep in mind it was not continuous work, example start 7am take a break at 10.30am, start again at 1/2 pm till finish. I was taking home close to 55k. The work was about 80% corporate customers, whats known as account work, the rest was local people, never did drunks so no bad experiences. It all depends on what area you live in and how good your accountant is, while doing the cabing I was dishing out business cards to customers offering computer/network problem solving, so got tons of work from that. Its such an easy job with tons of flexability, easy cash that it makes it hard to return to an IT type job.

Once again reinforcing my view that taxi drivers are thieving ******.

Excellent.

not all of us, some of us do declare what we actually earn , that said is it not true that only monday- friday income needs declared and weekends are free :)

;)

Maybe I've just had one too many experiences with realising afterwards that taxi drivers have taken me the long way round, or with them trying to hustle me for extra fares when they know I'm expensing the fare anyway, and what have you.
