The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, claimed to be the fastest gaming CPU, is launching in the Spring.

There's plenty of conjecture about pricing. Will it be a direct replacement for the 5800X, will it be an exclusive halo product with pricing to match or somewhere in between?

For reference here's the launch pricing (US Dollars) for the 5000 series processors and some recently launched Intel CPUs.

5950X $799
5900X $549
5800X $449
5600X $299

12900k $589
12700k $409
12600k $289

Could a Mod please create a poll. I'm suggesting the following tiers (US Dollars)

$650 or higher
$600 to $649
$550 to $599
$500 to $549
$450 to $499
$400 to $449
$350 to $399
$349 or lower

Thanks.

My initial thoughts were along the lines of the XT pricing so 5800X launch price + $50 ($499) but I feel AMD may want to market it as premium product so I'm going with $549 (5800X + $100).

Yeah you could be right. There's a rumour that it could be produced in very limited numbers, priced extremely high and they'd still sell due to the exclusivety.

@CAT-THE-FIFTH do you know if I need to contact a mod regarding a poll?

Personally I think they will do what they did with the FX9590 and the special edition Ryzen 7 2700X.

Stacked chiplets supply will be hampered by demand for Milan-X, so it's unlikely AMD will just tack 50 notes onto a 5800X and call it a day. As others have said, it's going to be based on gaming performance against Alder Lake, and also gaming performance against the 5900X which was launched as he "ultimate gaming CPU".

We're looking at the $550 to $599 bracket most definitely. To refine a little further:
  • Between 12700K and 12900K will be $550 to $599
  • Between the above and also above the 5900X it'll be $579
  • If it equals the 12900K then it'll be $599 because AMD will charge an extra tenner if it wins more than it loses.
  • If it surpasses the 12900K by a chunk then it'll be $629
Price point has to match performance point, AMD can't take a breakdown like my above musings and then slap an arbitrary premium on top because of scarcity. It just won't sell, especially with Zen 4 + AM5 coming in 6-9 months.

Whatever price they put it will sell well, every sample, and because many users have AM4 they only need cpu so it won't be that expensive unlike ADL which requires new motherboard.

Too rich for me?

Guess that's not a proper answer.

12600K and 12700K really imply it should be in between those, but AMD don't care for mindshare any more. Currently, 5800X and 5600X are vastly overpriced against Alder Lake (true, cheaper Alder Lake motherboards only just arrived), but AMD have not responded. Still, if this competes with 12900k might still appeal. Less cores but if gaming performance is similar and since it should consume about the same power as a 5800X (although the 12900K is surprisingly frugal in games) there will be market. And if the server market is snapping of Zen3 ExtremeCache like crazy, they hardly have many 5800X-3D to sell anyhow.

If they were reasonably aggressive with the price, they could do $400 or less. The part would be sold out most of the time but as long as it gets reviewed and ends up high in the review charts it will have done the job. Then they could take a leaf out of GPU MRSP and release a 5800XT 3D in the mode of a 3080Ti or similar. Not that I want to give them ideas.

That would be quite cunning indeed! Make everyone talk about the Ryzen 7 5800X3D,and make the ADL 8 core parts look relatively overpriced.

I was thinking along those lines when there were rumoured to be multiple skus.

In not so sure. If it is a very limited run and for instance matches thereabouts the 12900K / 12900KS performance I think AMD could charge a big premium and still sell the lot as they have user base. Also pricing high could be a good marketing tool as the buyers not interested in a very expensive product could be steered to the other 5000 series CPUs and help clear inventory before the Zen 4 launches.

Imagine having a mindset where you interpret a pragmatic response to a question is "shilling hard"

Tell me, where exactly is the "shill"?
While there is plenty of shilling around, there are some crazy responses where people are accused of shilling almost at random.

So if someone in the various financial threads says "I think they will do X and Y because that gets them the most money", they are shilling too! Does that mean in those threads only unrealistic opinions are good and neutral?
