How much does this forum cost to host each month?

But how are you determining every order has not been as a result of the forum? Do you ask them all when they phone up if they are a user of the forum? Or were a forum user before ordering?

Now adays they can judge it by how many people get free delivery.

and the rest! What happens if the single server breaks? That's a lot of lost revenue with no redundancy.

all dedi servers are raided to prevent data loss and imaged regularly if a server goes down the data is instantly re-imaged to another working server.

Downtime is what all hosts promise their customers they will not get, so they have the right precautions in place if something does happen

What a load of rubbish.

A) Free shipping is only for 'loyal' members, this rules out a huge percentage of the forum population.

B) Users who have first been attracted to OCUK through the forums but may no longer frequent the forums at all, whilst still remaining a loyal customer.

C) Users who are now using the free shipping may have placed an order with OCUK long before becoming a forum member.

So in conclusion, you're way off the mark.

and for the sales by forum mystery, i dont know exactly but dont we use the same email address to order from the store as we use to join the forum, and thne we join the forum account to the shop account for free shipping at a later date.
so they are connected and on a database ocUK can see weather the users are frequent on the forums or not?

maybe i dont know

Even if this was the case, this doesn't actually determine whether the forums helped bring the business or if the customer was going to place an order anyway.

i suppose remainnameless, i suppose its a 'what do you think' sort of answer, i can see the forums brining in a lot of sales for the company, as i am one of them, the community here have helped me to spec a pc and other ideas for me to go purchase my parts of the main website.

did this start in the same way for anyone else? thats the question we should ask, then we would know if the forums do bring in sales or not

A forum discussion may well help generate some interest in a product and boost sales. The forum may well encourage loyalty to OcUK and limit the spread of those sales to other suppliers. Whether there's any way to judge exactly how much value the forums add to the business is a different matter, but if sales to loyal forum members only represent a small proportion of overall sales it's probably not going to be a lot.

I'll let you all into a little secret.

The forums are hosted on Spie's old K6-2 350, running off a Diamond SupraExpress 56k serial modem.

Off topic but believe it or not i still have one of those modems (Diamond Supra Express 56e Pro) at the bottom of my wardrobe ;) in prefect working order too :D

Can anyone remember the sound of dialup and that good old AOL Browser !!

HAHA LMAO

O.o

To concur with a few previous posters, I was a "lurker" before a "Buyer". Funnily enough a competitor (a major high street one) told me about you say he got all his stuff from you when I was randomly talking with him one afternoon as I was buying a pack of CD's (not silly enough to buy anything expensive from them) of course this was bloody years ago now though :p
