How much does this forum cost to host each month?

Yes, but do you have an SLA with your provider? Hosting also costs a fair bit more in the UK than the US. Finally, what sort of redundancy do you have if your server fails?

what makes you so sure ocuk has any sort of SLA on thier packages bar anything standard?

I have to say I was a forum lurker long before I was an OCuK customer. Without the forums it's likely the purple place would have got my cash when I built my last machine.

However, being able to use the website to choose my components then cut and paste to the forums to get the spec peer-reviewed before purchase is the kind of service you could never get from the purples and I'm too far from the ocuk shop to make the trip and get advice.

The forums have definately made me a customer and I will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Pretty sure Spie or a don a few years back said it was around £60k a year.

Pretty sure that isn't the case and the only details that have been made public were the rough total cost of everything to do with the web side of things for both the shop and the forum, hosting, designing and maintaining and what have you.
I doubt anyone ever said just hosting this forum would be £60k per year tbh:)

Wow there's so much uninformed rubbish being spouted here. Until somebody decides to spill the beans it's impossible to say, I'd guesstimate in the £10-30k bracket myself, depending on the hardware, quality of network and transit (having looked at the serverstream site, I'm not impressed personally) and how they're financing it (fully managed solution with the hardware cost distributed over the contract could easily be £2k+ a month).

Id probably would not use OCuK to buy anything if there was not forum few years ago, since then I've spent about 3k here (not much but always something), now multiply that by few thousands of users and they get their money back.

why bother? you can get UNLIMITED space and UNLIMITED bandwidth for like $10 a month

No such thing as unlimited, they would fall over in seconds because it simply isnt viable.

So in your "expert" opinion then what is wrong with serverstream?? I've used them for my business hosting (along wiht reg1 the sister company) for years and they are superb.

They claim they're network is Cisco 7200 routers and 3500 switches, which is the bear minimum you can get away with, the 3500s in particular are old tech now and were never service provider kit to start with. Maybe it works but it's hardly state of the art network wise, which suggests an unwillingness or inability to invest in their network. I don't know them, but if I was choosing a provider tomorrow that'd cross them straight off my list.
