Free (to college members).

Equipment is: Bench, power rack, 2 olympic bars, dumbells, pull-up/dip station, 3 ergs, broken multigym. Everything it needs.:)

£50 a month for bannatyne. Huge gym with swimming pool, sauna, steam room and all that other crap you'd expect at a health club.

I did cancel bannatyne's about 6 months ago and joined a small gym for £23 a month. Ended up back at bannatyne's because its closer to my home and I walk there in 15 minutes.

Interesting

Is 29 GBP joining fee + 49 to 54gbp per month (offpeak hours) a lot of money for the following ?

free Health mot glucose test, body fat etc

Use of gym,swimming pool,tennis area,classes,sauna,spa,steam room free towel + a few others.

Out of Parkwood leisure ,nuffield health,La fitness what do you recormend ?(ps sorry if names not allowed)

names mean nothing really, as some of the ones you mention are new builds and some are bought from other companies. Of which some of the old ones will be poor and some good.
For example, Nuffield took over cannons, the cannons in Crawley was great but the cannons in twickenham was poor in comparison.

£22 a month brand new Dw Fitness. Equipment: more than you could comfortably use:can also be changed every three years as the umpteen types of machines they use are hired.

edit: looked at keele Uni gym recently and was astounded by how rubbish it was and how much they were fleecing the students to use it

£80 a year at the university gym at Essex which was reasonably good value.
2 benching stations, squat rack, 2 smiths, leg press, big double cable crossover with pullup stand as well, amongs with various other machines.

Now they are refurbishing it so we're all packed in some squash courts, but the plan for the new gym (ready in mid June) looks impressive, wonder how much it will cost.

£67/mo at Esporta, has pools courts etc. But the Gym itself has a power rack with fixed bar, a power cage, smiths, squat/walk in, bench station, incline station..... lots of benches, and 6 different cable machines.

It's dead expensive, but, even when moderately full there's enough equipment to do the main lifts and more. The other gyms around here are within towns so VERY busy at 5pm when I go and have less equipment. This one is just off the A127 so a bit out of the way so doesnt get busy until about 6-7.

Perfect.... apart from the price :/

the price is actually good for what you get at most esportas, they really have built the whole lifestyle thing into it.
we are very tempted to get a joint membership at our local as it would be cheap for swimming for wife and baby (when it comes), goot for my boy and great for me.... depends on whether i go with the other cheaper gym or not.

when you think about the little extras it is pretty good, as lame as it sounds the other sunday when it was really hot me and a ladyfriend went for a swim, laid in the sun by the pool with a book etc. And the food is fantastic (they dont do much healthy food, hell, they got a full on bar there :/ ). But it is a lifestyle thing, yes. This obviously depends on the actual branch I would have thought also.

edit - and very family friendly, for a single chap like me it's a little annoying with little kids screamin about, but I guess I just dont understand yet :D

all the ones i've seen are the same, specific buildings, so guess they would be similar inside.
the family orientation is what is making us consider it :]

£55-65 a month (I think) in Central London (Fitness First Black).

You don't have to pay the joining fee if you really haggle with them! I know fitness first do some scheme (BodyFirst?) with joining fees (Pay £50 joining fee but come 20 times in 2/3 months and you get £50 back).

Set realistic targets and times to go... Otherwise you'll end up slacking! Don't say "I'll go six times a week for four weeks" as I can bet money you wont :p.

And personally, id say go for a club where you get free towels without fuss! Certainly stops you carrying around wet stuff all day if you're doing it on a work schedule.
