How much must direct line loose not being on comparrison sites?

Then you don't fit their target profile, surely it's not that confusing?

Why would you expect them of all the insurance companies to be cheaper?

Are you not equally confused at any of the other companies who don't give you the cheapest quotes?

On the comparison site topic - they serve a purpose, they're usually good for figuring out which companies to haggle a bit more with and which ones are worth ignoring at the very least.

I would love to know exactly who they want as customers then? I drive a normal car, have never had an accident ( that I caused.. and the two I had where idiots drove into me are now over 5 years ago ) am 38 and live in a good postcode area! I must be too high risk clearly lol

I have found Tesco to be the best and cheapest, I can get £0 excess and full breakdown cover included for the same as most others want to insure me for...

Direct Line clearly market themselves as being the best people to go for when requiring a quote over that of comparison sites, regardless of whether you would get the best price or not.

The reason they can do that is simply because they are huge and also one of the most well known and trusted insurance companies in the UK.

It's also a direct competition marketing, aimed at being no-fuss, to the point, when compared (see what I did there) to insurance comparison websites, who largely rely on tacky marketing and perhaps may not even get you the best quote compared to putting some effort in. They are in effect putting themselves above the comparison websites in their marketing.

Just take Compare the Market for example, I was on a train going through Clapham Junction yesterday and they have a billboard which is about the size of 5 billboards long devoted purely to an advert for the fact there is the special edition meerkat toy currently available. It's all a bit silly really.

Well, I stand corrected. I had a quote saved for my new car from QuotemeHappy which was by far the cheapest, and which I'd found on a comparison site.

Just went through Direct Line and got a quote for £45 less.

I take it back.

Who knows but surely it's fairly obvious they're all looking for different things otherwise there would pretty much always be one insurer most competitive.

I'm 26, drive a normal car, no accidents, fault or otherwise, good postcode and Direct Line have always been appalling for me (as have Tesco) - I don't know who they do want but it isn't me and so I just moved on to the next one, like every other insurer who gave me a bad quote.

I was just a bit confused as to why you don't 'get' DirectLine as if they in particular should be the cheapest for some reason and you were confused why they weren't?

Because their adverts claim to be cheaper than others?

They make a big thing of not being on comparison sites because if you "go direct" you save money and they will be better.... when they simply aren't! They claim to beat like for like quotes but don't, etc etc so yes that's why I don't quite get their angle.

They do not appear to offer anything different to any other company who are on comparison sites, so I really cannot understand why they make a big deal out of not being on them.

Meh, most insurance companies bang on about being the cheapest (if they didn't no one would bother to try them), don't see that DL are that much different really :p

The only times I've tried comparison websites I've received ridiculously high quotes...

I think they're crap and I'd imagine there are plenty more with similar views.

How I play it is I enter my details in for a quote, and wait for the barrage of phonecalls and tell each one the best quote I got was several hundred cheaper.

They soon all start quoting realistic prices ;)

I'd imagine they'd lose a lot more than they're losing by not being on them

Direct Line have always come out more expensive than quotes on comparison sites.

What I tend to do these days is go on a comparison site for a price, take the lowest three and then call them up and play them off each other.

I find them horrifically more expensive to the point where they must be having a ***** laugh.

13 years iv been driving, and I have never claimed, 13 years no claims I tell you 13 years !!!

Swift wanted £225 (fair), direct line well over £400

HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHA funny -_-

Weird business model that, scaring people off with daft prices, they must not like money ? *shrugs*

I always use comparison sites and often order it through the site. whenever I have got a quote direct from the insurance company website to compare it has always been identical, to the pence.

Anyone using compare sites only to get their insurance quotes... hahahahahahahahahahaha poor you.... being ripped off.

Three ways an insurance companies get business, direct with a lot of advertising, through comparison sites, or through brokers like me.Each cost money. Some do all three, some pin their hat in one avenue.

Resistance is futile.

On topic, I have never found Direct Line particularly competitive when comparing them to comparison sites, they always tended to be a good bit dearer when I was looking for prices for my unmodified cars. More often than not, the specialists tended to be cheaper for me as well so I suppose you just have to see what happens as Conscript found out above :)
