How much of a beating can a liver take?

Ive been getting sloshed every Friday and Saturday for about the past two years. Takes about 8 beers to get me sloshed. I'm not dead, so how much does it take?

Who knows? Ask us in another 10 years. Then again who cares? Chances are you die from getting a kicking, being stabbed, or catching Hepatitis from some slapper albeit male or female (no idea of your persuasion sorry)

Some of the replies are a little harsh though the question was a little stupid. The liver will hand that amount of beer and probably some more without any trouble for the rest of your life. It wont do you any good but the body will handle.

What would concern me more is the brain and the impact alcohol has up top.

Hmm. Varies. If you aren't randomly binge drinking or not abusing ** liver every day i guess thats better than some other situations.

Wasnt there once a king who was so paranoid about being poisoned that he took some every day to get immune to it. One day his country was invaded and rather than be captured he drank a whole flask of poison...it did nothing, he was immune! (also his liver dealt with that i guess too)

Sounds like a fairytale i know. Ill look again to find the story its true...it said it in a book!

Which probably isn't ideal for the body either, excess in almost anything isn't good for you. I'd also thought that if you drank very large quantities of water you risked flushing out vital salts etc, in rare and extreme cases leading to hypotranemia although perhaps someone wants to correct me if my understanding is wrong.

Nope, you are quite right, that's what killed Leah Betts.

All the talk about alcoholism is making me laugh, you really are naive if you think drinking two nights a week will turn you into an alcoholic. I know plenty of people who have the odd glass of wine, or a pint or two after a long day at work.

I'm pretty sure the OP will grow out of binge drinking eventually, after which I'm sure the amount he drinks will lessen.

You only live once, may as well enjoy it while you can :p

If you have to ask then it's better not to drink at all. Your going to damage your liver to some degree if you binge drink every weekend, especially if your younger. That's why i choose not to touch the stuff. Anyone that can drink 8 beers one after another is just mad in my opinion, i rather drink 8 bottles of water.

You clearly aren't from Glasgow :p

It's scientific FACT that if you were nuked from orbit all that would be left would a slightly smoking, but otherwise undamaged, liver.

My alcoholic uncle has drank between 1 and 3 litres of vodka a day, every day, for the past 20 odd years and he's still alive - just. He's quite yellow and is probably going to die soon.

But if he's still alive then the liver can take a hell of a beating.

i severely doubt he drinks that much everyday

1 litre of vodka has 37.5 units in it

your uncle averages 2 litres a day

thats 75 units a day

your body can get rid of 1 unit of alcohol an hour

75-24 = 51 units a day still in the system

51 units * 365 * 20 = 372,300 units of alcohol in his body just now

so i severely doubt he even drinks a litre a day, he may however drink a litre once every 2-3 days

unless hes drinking crap vodka too, how does he afford it all?

2 litres at say £20 because its cheap vodka = £140 a week, and i severely doubt he holds down any job if he is drinking that much

1-3 liters of vodka is a hell of a lot. 1 liter I could believe....but 3? Pretty sure you would die very quickly.

Can't believe some of the replys in this thread, like its not a big deal at all, when it really is, its serious.

Ive lost relatives to alchohol abuse and dont think "oh my liver can take another 2 years of drinking"

worst ******* attitude towards a big killer ever.

Yea as highlighted it's a very immature attitude to take. :(

He buys a 1 litre bottle every day without fail and he is the only one who drinks it. He doesn't average 2 bottles a day. He drinks one every day and occasionaly he will drink 2 or 3 in a day which results in another trip to the hospital. This happens about once a month.

How does he afford it? The government give him a disability allowance because he is an alcoholic, much to my anger. He gets a flat and all the associated bills paid for him and on top of that he gets just short of £1000 a month to spend on booze. It's a disgrace.

When I was in hospital a couple of weeks ago I was on the gastro ward, which is full of alcoholics. Judging by most of the people coming in and out of there, you're far more likely to get some form of stomach/instestinal/esophageal cancer before having any major liver troubles.

You are right. However there's been no record of death by water(drinking). They reckon most people would have to drink around 10 litres within a hour to suffer this. However drinking less than this can flush out salts. One of the tell tails signs of a to low salt diet is cramps, especially in women.
