How much of a beating can a liver take?

Considering you have to lose about 90+% of your liver function before you even notice, there is a strong chance that permanent damage could well have occurred already. If you were to take a blood sample a day or so after a "binge", you'll see a blip in the GGT, which is caused by liver damage... so no, i dont advocate only cutting back only once you have problems, since that will be too late...

Cant believe some of the things im reading here....i work with alcoholic liver patients and its unbeleiveable the ages of people i see coming through the door...if you ask me its very irresponsible...yes the liver is a tough organ but it can take even a small amount of alcohol to screw it up....i have patients who are in their 20's who are showing signs of cirrhosis....if you ask me its pretty much self inflicted - alcoholics should be last on the transplant lists because they obviously dont care enough about their own livers to warrant a new one...i guess it throws up a lot of ethical issues.

It seems really strange that lots of you are willing to destroy your liver for fun; the liver can compensate for a lot of abuse but once you show signs of decompensation you are well and truly screwed....my advice, dont drink at all!

all these nay sayers and advice givers, if you want to drink m8 drink away, drink until you forget english. when your dead, you'll be sorry you never.

What makes me laugh is people who drink to get drunk?

I have a drink occasionally, well a couple of times a week, one or two beers down the local.

Well, I drink cos I enjoy the taste - I also enjoy the taste of various fizzy drinks, but I don't drink 8 pints of that on an evening just so I can be seen as Alpha-Male :)

I drink for the enjoyable taste - I prefer Real Ale anyway which is of lower % than a larger or cider!

Can't read whole thread - losing internet any second.

Watch out for Paracetamol - serious damage to liver if you overdose !!

Edit: If you drink really heavily you will lots of other symptoms and warnings before your liver packs in.

There was a lassie on a job centre course that was popping paracetamol and other pain killers just to look pale and sickly for sympathy...

The guy that was in charge of the class soon spotted it and told her in front of every one that one of his friends was stupid and done the same crap then suddenly died due to a failing liver. I think it might of shocked that lassie enough to actually stop doing it.

edit: btw i was in no way trying to boast about my drinking earlier in this thread since the topic is how much of a beating can a liver take, i thought i would add the beating mine has taken and im not proud of it in the least.

its simply an addiction and im starting to believe i have a problem.

Never been into drinking a lot. I've only ever been wasted once in my life, I was puking up everywhere and ended up passing out. 2 Beers and whiskey did it for me on that night.

I say, if you can't resist a drink, then you already have a problem.

Again reading this thread, theres some absolute ******* stupid comments from some, not all but some, and i think you need to grow up and realise how ******* serious alchoholism is.

quoted for truth tbh. alcohol has been affecting my life some what over the last few years and its doing more so right now, i could probably be easily classed as a alcoholic with how much i drink most evenings.

all i say in my defence is i sit at a computer and tv and never go out and start crap like all the local neds seem to do. which means no one else is getting hurt and only my body is.

Which probably isn't ideal for the body either, excess in almost anything isn't good for you. I'd also thought that if you drank very large quantities of water you risked flushing out vital salts etc, in rare and extreme cases leading to hypotranemia although perhaps someone wants to correct me if my understanding is wrong.

yeah...i heard this aswell. Which is probably true. I guess too much of anything is bad for you.

too much water suddenly can cause the lining in the skull to expand and as a result cause death.
