How much Storage is in your HTPC?

3 x internal 1TB drives
2 x external 1TB drives
2 x external 500GB drives

Could do with a bit more free space though now :(

why do people rip blu rays when they take up so much space, would it not be better just to play them straight of the blu ray, just sound expensive in harddrive space

Yes they do take up a lot of disk space. But I want everything in the same place, all selectable and playable without having to get up and find a disc. :D

I would be willing to bet a fair amount of money on saying that the majority of people who hold bluray rips didn't rip them themselves...

why would you say that? unless you are reffering to remuxed rips that are downloaded or something, because i cant see many people downloading a sizable amount of real rips at 30-50gb a pop.

i'd rip mine but im backwards - id much rather put the disc in an play it than go to the hassle of ripping it and than playing them on a pc. too much faffinf for my like, plus i'd need.....at least 1.5tb for my blurays alone. probably more like 2tb.

Oh, yeah that is precisely what i am talking about. However the remuxed rips are what most people refer to generically, as "rips".

Anyway, just answering the guys question as to how people can use much space. I suspect that for some people this is the reason. I could well be incorrect.

no, i can quite believe it. i guess it depend how important the quality is to you - im not going to go to the trouble of building a htpc, buying a nice big tv and half decent sound system and then download 720p bluray mkv's off the net lol.

I have started to rip (original) blu-rays as I have 3 HTPCs and saves me having to have a blu-ray drive in each one. I wasn't going to do blu-ray/HD-DVDs but 1tb drives are cheap and it worked so well with DVDs that I decided to do HD disks aswell probaly won't do all of them though. Also means I can dump them onto my laptop which doesn't have a blu-ray drive.

I rip my own - the ones on the net for one are not not fully HD and most have everything stripped away including the True HD audio :(

2.5 tb HTPC
2 tb main rig

Just finished putting my HD movies on.
Now to do my Blu-ray.

When you have a massive collection of dvds its so much easier having them on your hard drive instead of loads of shelves full of discs.

Just out of interest, do any of you guys have any backup's of your system or would you be happy to rip all your films again should anything happen to your rigs?

Cheers

Rob

I run a raid 5 array, disks in the attic as a backup to this. When doing the movie DVDs I had 6 DVD drives going at the same time so it didn't take too long to rip the 500 odd disks as it takes about 4 minutes a disk to rip so I could do 90 disks an hour.

I have looked into a tape drive backup system as I have another couple of TBs in my main PC of photos etc but this is fairly expensive at present if you want to backup TBs of data to a resonable small amount of tapes. I do however have important documents backed up to online storage.
