How much will a 8700k bottleneck a RTX 3080?

Asking on behalf of a friend.

He has a 8700k and plays at 1440p.

How much if any would a 8700k bottleneck a RTX 3080?

Really I'm referring to next gen titles such as Watch Dogs Legion or CyberPunk for example.

I know we can't answer this fully until tomorrow at the earliest but if you had to take a guess what would you say?
Maybe he could upgrade his 8700k to a 9900k
(should only cost around £200 with the money from selling the 8700k ;) )

This is what i myself is thinking of doing ;)

If its overclocked it doubt it will make much diff
my 9900KS is never fully loaded not even 50%
most games its around 10%-30%

When It's At 10-30%- it's usually a game predominantly uses 1 or 2 cores. what percentage are they?

I’m going to say 99% of people will see zero bottlenecks until Q2 2021. Maybe Q3 depending on the 3070’s mining performance.

Very little bottleneck from what I've seen, especially at 1440p many scenarios will be GPU bound and in those that aren't it'll be case of high FPS with an 8700K Vs slightly higher FPS with a newer CPU. Minimums will be lower but still well above a level that would cause an issue.

I'll be using a 3090 on a 7700k until new Ryzen is out (assuming it outperforms a 10900k). Ultimately you will be giving up some frames, but you can always upgrade CPU in the future. I bet the difference won't be big at all. More so on the lows.
I will also wait for the release of the new Ryzen.

I haven't seen any mention of refresh rate, which is surely the most important factor?

At 1440p, if you're pushing heavy effects (both of the games you mention are RT titles, for example) I think you'll be just fine with the 8700K honestly.

I'm pretty sure i will.. i am not fussed about 5% less ten top cpu... it is not worth spending couple of hundreds for an upgrade

The 8700K has aged very well, those who bought them at launch have a chip that when overclocked still performs within a few percentage of the fastest modern CPU's in gaming 3 years later (it will drop a little further behind come the 5th of November but still).

Why on earth would an overclocked 8700K bottleneck anything. It's the same tech as in the 10900K.
