How noisy should a 360 be?

Mine is ruddy loud. Even playing a game with my sound system on quite loud (I use hi-fi seperates rather than the tv speakers), I can still always hear the 360. It's not too bad in racing games when you've got the cars engine drone, but playing a quiet level on SC : DA the noise ruins the atmosphere.

They should have included a drive read setting in the console settings. Having the drive spin slower would probably have helped with the read errors and disc scratching too. I could live with 50% longer load times like I believe the PS3 has (from what I've read).

The fans are cheap rubbish too.

I would like the option to copy the data to the HDD when the game is inserted, so that the disc doesnt need to spin up

The PJ also makes some noise due to the cooling fan but having a very loud 5.1 cinema setup helps :p

Fair enough, but better quality fans are usually quieter. My PC fans are probably 5x quieter than the 360 ones.
Depends I think the 360 uses Delta (But some don't) and they are known to be pretty loud mothers. :p

The noise can be minimised by sitting the 360 on an appropriate surface.
Mine is currently sat on top of my aluminium trunk which is a bad idea as the vibration pass to the trunk which makes the noise worse.

What I'm going to do is cut out 4 pieces from a soft mouse mat and put them under the feet to absorb the vibrations. This should help to reduce what noise there is.
It's never going to be silent but it should help to keep it down to minimum.

From what ive read its not that the fans are loud, its that the grill on the back oof the machine is crap and blocking air from escaping, along with the actual drive being loud.

there are 2 questions here:

Q: How loud should a 360 be?

A: Quiet, ideally silent

Q:Actually how loud IS a 360?

A: From my experience, when playing games, really bloomin' loud  but hey-ho, what can we do? The games ARE fun at least.

The streaming from HDD would actually be a good idea. I tend to play the one game for a month and then change so it could save that game and would need to stream on occasion

lol mine doesn't bother me at all i mean its not like im gonna leave it on all nite anyways plus my 8800gtx with the fan forced to 100% is louder so its no big deal as my pc is on 24/7 so im used to it!!

it all depends how big your room is..

how big your speakers are

how far you sit away from the 360

in a small room the 360 sucks bad, you cant forget about the noise, that awful whine!

I sit about 30cm away from my 360 and it doesn't bother me at all. :)

The noise is fussed about way too much honestly it makes no difference when my TV is on and I don't even play at a loud volume.

Anyways, As Jihad said, In general DVD playback, the 360 i've been using is pretty quiet, But when in game, it's very loud. and as said, You do have to turn the TV up a fair bit to drown it out. In comparison to what you'd set the TV level to, when just watching normal TV, or even a DVD running in the 360 :p

If you've ever had a bog standard 40/48X CD-ROM drive in your PC then that gives you a pretty good idea of the noise it generates, I've got mine on the carpet to dampen the noise and it's still terribly loud.
