How Nvidia Won and AMD Lost the GPU War

I'm taking the wait and see approach with regards to buying new PC hardware. I don't blame people jumping ship and buying consoles, that's up to them.

Thing is, PC gaming has you by the balls. I've tried going back to consoles and it just isn't happening. I returned a PS4 only after 2 weeks. Everything was a downgrade. Hated it.

From 2020 onwards, things will be different for the GPU market, it'll be more competitive with Intel/AMD and Nvidia all releasing new hardware. With regards to Intel, their GPU doesn't need to be a fire breathing whore, it just needs to be competitive enough to take market share away from Nvidia.

One thing is certain, my next GPU will be one that supports FreeSync 2. I game in the living room and will be looking for a new TV set that supports this standard.

1 problem with console gaming is a lot of times videos of it are very misleading. It looks good in the videos but you play it yourself and the textures blurring and aliasing stair stepping is really obvious. For some reason videos dumb that down to a large degree making it look very close to pc visuals.

Yep, this was one aspect that really bothered me when playing on the system. Worse than that, you can't really do anything about it.

Depends the console. Xbone X is pretty solid, much better than my PS4P. And especially having it paired with a Freesync 4K HDR TV, is fantastic.

That's quite good then if you've got an X1X. I had the base PS4, it was a disaster. Funny that the baseline console doesn't even get you the best console experience now. :D

I'd been waiting on the 2xxx series to upgrade from a GTX 970 that I've been using to drive a 3440x1440 60 hz display, but the current pricing debacle has made me pause to re-evaluate my priorities. I think it helps I took a long break from *real* PC gaming / hardware enthusiasm between 2007 and 2014, so I still vividly remember the big thing back then being getting a graphically modded Oblivion to run at ~40 fps @ 1680x1050. These days my overworked GTX 970 can get 40-50 fps in games like the Witcher 3 at very reasonable settings with nearly 3x that many pixels to push, and it easily spends most of its time at my 60hz vsync ceiling in games like GTA V. The borderless full screen 'trick' does a great job eliminating distracting tearing too, which thankfully quashed my temptation to shell out for a G-sync monitor.

For me, taking my gaming experience to the next level the nVidia way with Gsync, 100hz, ultra settings etc, without sacrificing UWQHD, means coughing up preposterous money (according to my sensibilities), and the 2xxx series has reinforced this. Obviously will have to upgrade eventually, with Cyberpunk 2077 probably being the big thing to prompt that, but will hope AMD can intervene before it launches with some very tempting GPUs at a reasonable price.

I was never on Xbox. Always preferred Sony (PS3/4/4P) but something was amiss and was always back to PC gaming.
However from one side Freesync from the other side the substantial upgraded hardware, got it. And since then playing all the current games on it.

So the PC is now delegated to WOT, and PDX made games (HOI4, CK2, EU4, Stellaris)

Consoles getting a feature like Freesync is a huge step in the right direction. Definitely.

Just saw your signature :D

It has to be said mate, because it's true. :D

In fact, i was that disgusted by the whole RTX/2*** launch, i emailed Nvidia to tell them my disapproval. Whether they get back to me is another matter, i don't care, but it had to be done. Lol.

They've been taking pelters for the whole fiasco and it's been deserved.

Ps4 got One thing or FEW even that Xbone and PC does not have :
Uncharted series
God of war
Spiderman
Horizon zero down
Detroit

It's called GOOD games. Rest is stuff You can play on PC.
Atm best combo to own is PC + PS4 Pro.
Especially that Ps4pro + TV costs less than 2080 haha

Cannot say the same as the 55NU8000 cost me 850.... But xbox x and TV cost me less than the strix and other £1400 2080tis :D

Also since using it with the Vega 64 from time to time adds value :D

Do you think if the RTX2080Ti was £3200 people would still buy it?
Yes. Enthusiasts are not price sensitive. Halo products are like first class on a flight to the states, people (or preferably their companies!) will pay way way more than the price of economy for relatively little extra. From a shareholder's perspective Nvidia should raise their prices further. They will still sell.

Not a chance, they may well still sell but numbers would be down drastically. How many titan v's do you see out there? Not many at all, and that's not £3200.

That's not quite true, do you remember the Nvidia Geforce Titan Z? The OCUK Owners Thread is quite amusing. It does show though there is a point at which people even likes to Kaap will say no.

Have to agree and disagree. The AMD mid range cards (RX 580) seem better than the Nvidia counterparts (GTX 1060). This is comparing price, with the RX580 outperforming the 3 GB 1060. The 6 GB models are vastly more expensive. It is the high end where AMD are miles behind.

Actually AMD doesn't have halo product the Ti/Titan pricing.
Just bellow it the Vega is fine beating the 1080, and in many new game engines even within single percent to 1080Ti.
