How often do you check your work email inbox?

When something is time critical you need to ensure the person has received the communication, his manager did not do that and email is not an appropriate way to contact someone for urgent matters. Email can be and often is delayed, things which are supposed to be immediate can take minutes or even hours. That's without going into busy work environments where you may be getting hammered with emails, most of which are guff and little more than a distraction. Taking the time to check every single email I get the moment I get it would impede my ability to work, it would for many.
His boss was at fault here, if the matter was urgent it was on him to communicate that in a verifiable way. It would have been appropriate to send a follow up email detailing the discussion, but as the primary point of contact it's a poor call.

It sounds more like someone was sleeping in.
If you get an email from your boss/manager read it.
If your boss rings and asks for an update don't tell him you didn't read the email until 11 if you start at 8.

EDIT: I thought this thread was going to be about outside of work hours but 3 hours to catch an email from your boss during work hours is fairly poor especially if you are sat in front of your computer all day.

if i looked at every email i get as they arrived i wouldn’t get much actual work done.

I use Outlook Mail,So get instant notification on my phone of emails etc,Although have to manually check on PC as i use the web based version.

This, I'm coming to the tail end of a massive project at the moment, a few weeks back I was getting 80-100 emails on some days. I can't consistently keep on top of that mess and also do the work that's required of me, anybody complaining about my response time to random emails got short shrift.
It will obviously depend on your job or role or what you are doing or whether your tasks can change day to day. if someone picked up the phone and rang me every time they wanted something I'd also get no actual work done.
It's a lesson for both parties involved the op now knows he should be checking his email for updates on tasks and his boss now knows he needs follow up with any urgent requests with the op as he can't be trusted to keep up to date with tasks via email.( This came across harsher than intended, I just meant his boss probably uses the same email methods with others without issue)
The context of how the rest of the office works will be key here for the op especially if receiving emails from colleagues and managers with requests is "part of his job".
I would not get away with "not reading" an email or teams message from my boss for 3 hours. Unless of course there were actual IT problems but I suspect that wasn't the case.

Did you book overtime for this, or did you finish early?
As for specific OP question, if I was your boss I would have called you if it's that important or if it was too early to call I would have asked you to acknowledge receipt of email.

No i just worked longer that day. Im on 2 weeks leave from Monday so wanted to make sure i got stuff done.

This. He probably realised that when he made the phone call and got uppity. I don't tend to check email all the time, or Skype/Teams and I'd like to think urgent stuff would come through a phone call.
