Once or twice a year. Usually after an upgrade. Don't see the point in doing it more regularly if you keep your system ship shape.

I defrag by access at least once a week though.

I can't remember the last time I did this, maybe once a year on average. I've normally upgraded my system and done a clean install before I've ever done a format and reinstall.

Pretty much how I do things with my XP Pro install. Got a problem with MSN's emoticons. I can send them but I only see the text code for them, even ones sent to me. However the people I send them to can see the emoticons in their graphical glory. So format this weekend I think.

I was forever reformatting and re-installing windows, but since giving up PC gaming I don't bother anymore.

My current XP Pro installation is over a year old and still runs smoothly and responsive. Although I am selective in what I do install and also carry out regular maintenence.

Helps massively if you're the only person using it too!

Same here. In my experience there is no real loss of performance on Win XP Pro as long as you keep maintenece up and don't install crap.

I usually keep my installation for 18 months or longer.

I don't really see any point in reinstalling every 3 months.

I clog up my system with junk so about every couple of months I do. Just lately I have been flitting back and forth between XP64 and Vista64.

Normally I leave it as long as possible without doing a reinstall. But lately I have been reinstalling every month or two when installing the latest Vista beta. I will probably go back to reinstalling every 1-2 years now.

Built my current rig (AMD 64 3000+ NForce 4 Board, GF6800LE 1GB RAM , 320GB over 3 drives) and in the 15months its been built, I've not re-instaled once, nor do I intend to.
