How often do you get a new GPU?

Still on my Gigabyte GTX 480 SOC which I bought for £220 when the GTX 580 came out a long time ago! Its been a great card and has the added benefit of keeping the house warm in the winter. Was going to buy a 970 about 6 months ago but am glad I waited for the new cards. Got my eye on a 1070...

2010 - 5770
2012 - 6950
2015 - 290X (march)
2015 - 980Ti (october)

The upgrades have all been driven by a need, typically me upgrading monitor and resolution. The first upgrade was to support a 1440P monitor.
The 290X and 980Ti were to support 4K monitor, 290x was a stop gap at the time as I was waiting for Fury (which came to late hence the switch to Nvidia)
I'll probably switch to the 1080Ti when it's released.

Really only when there's a new game I play that I can't max the details on at 1080p or at the very worst have to drop AA.

I still can't see the point of 4K gaming if you can't run 60fps on everything, or saying I can run it at 4K if I drop to medium settings, yuck, no thanks I'll stick to 1080p.

I'm saving up for either a 1080Ti or the AMD equivalent. Something that can really hammer 4K at high settings.

Problem is I have other hobbies that I have to feed too. If it weren't for them I would have a lot more money to pump into my rig.

First world problems eh.

Got a 390 r9 msi in october last year. I dont plat that many high graphics games nor do i play tons these days.

This should last abit i would have thought.

I never used to bother upgrading but as visuals have improved I've wanted more grunt for them, Ideally I'd like a gpu to last me at least 2 years but I've had 5 in the last 3 years.
I will need to upgrade again as I want a new monitor but I want to wait as long as possible to make sure AMD stay competitive before committing to an adaptive-sync and one brand to run it.

This time I hope to get a gpu that will last 2 or 3 years.

Only when I need one these days ;)

And even then, I tend to pick up whatever has just been superceded from the members market.

Bought a 4gb 680 for £200 shortly after the 780 came out.
Then when I needed a bit more oomph for Elite Dangerous Horizons on planets, I sold the 680 for £80 and replaced with a 780 for £140.

I'm sure I'll pick up a 980ti in 6 months time for a similar amount :p

I could easily go out and buy a gtx1080 but I just don't feel they represent value for money. I guess I may view that differently if I had the time to play games more often.

Every year when something new comes out, I don't play games anymore so I sold my 980ti and got a 680 instead, that'll do me now.

I bought a 980Ti and haven't used it all really after 2 weeks from purchase. Haven't gamed in the last 6 months at least so I think my next upgrade will probaby be the 1180 (I hope it's not called that) or 1180Ti.

Usually when I can get (at least) double the performance of my current card for the same price I paid last time.

..and its looking like the 1070 won't make the grade.

I'm speeding up recently. I used to skip more generations. I tend to add extra cards later on.

Cirrus Logic 5428 (VESA local bus days)
ATi Xpert@work -1997
3dfx Voodoo2 8mb - 1998

GF3Ti500 - 2001
GF FX5900XT - 2004
GF 8800GTX - 2006
GF 8800GTX SLi - 2007
GF 8800GTX Tri-SLi - 2008
ATi 4870X2 - late 2008
ATi 4870X2 Crossfore - 2010
AMD 7970 - 2011
AMD 7970+7990 - 2013
GTX 980 SLi - 2014

I just managed to talk myself out of buying 980ti when it came out, only because 1 would not be an upgrade and 2 was a ton of cash. I will probably drop for 1080.

I went to 2560x1600 with the first 8800GTX, I feel like I've been chasing that resolution since. It's only with the 980s and the RoG Swift that I'm finally satisfied with the performance and now I'm looking at 4k :(

Stuck with the 7970 from release day to 980 release, as AMD did nothing but rebrand the card rather than bring out anything particularly new.

Not often enough these days.

Generally when there's a big boost available that's not of the 25-30% gimmickry we've had for quite a few years. Probably 50%+. Find it hard to understand why people upgrade for minor performance increases (780ti to 980 for example), sure its a new toy to play with but not worth the outlay imo.

Whenever I feel that there's an upgrade which offers a good performance boost and the features I want for a decent price.

Currently still using a 7870XT which performs OK, although I likely would have got a 390/Fury Nano had they supported HDMI 2.0.

I tend to only upgrade my gpu when I'm not getting a smooth experience in the games that I play, such as less than 50fps for example.

This has been my upgrades over the years:

Matrox G200
Nvidia TNT2
Powervr Kyo ii
Nvidia GeForce 2 MX400
ATI Radeon 9200
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Nvidia GeForce 6600GT
ATI Radeon X1900XT
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX
AMD Radeon HD 6800
Nvidia GeForce GTX 570
AMD Radeon HD 7950
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970

So far the 970 is doing the job for me in nearly everything I throw at it.
