How old is too old?

Great discussion.

Personally I think it's all about balance, I raid two nights a week on wow, I go to the pub one night a week with some mates and I go cycling whenever I can -- and I'm over 40
and have two kids - who get the rest of my time :)

Given the choice between watching TV and gaming - it's gaming every time.

Its the adverts that kill TV for me. Even when one of the few programs that I like is on, there are so many interruptions that its just not worth watching. I have to record anything I want to watch, just so I can skip past the adds every few minutes.

My granther is 70 and hes a big JRPG fan. He has played and finished the FF series many times, also played skies of arcadia, blue dragon and loads more.
Ive just recently got him on the DS and he loves it as theres some new JRPG he can pla on there.
He is also on about buying the 3ds XL so he can see the screen better.

I'm 44 and find that as I get older my reactions times are slower particularly in FPS, I can just about hold my own in COD and BF3 but absolutely get spanked in Counterstrike which gets frustrating after a bit. Don't think I've noticed a difference in racing games even something as fast as Wipeout!

Just clicked the last page of this thread and first thing I saw was pitchfork's post, wondered what where I was for a minute!

I'm 38 I play bf3 a lot and I also wonder weather my reaction times are slowing, my first gameing was in 82 a games Console called the Philips g7000 if anyone remembers that. But I realy got into gameing in in 87 with the Commodore 64, they were the days no flame wars. But answer to your question your never to old as its been mentioned its escapism just like tv or any hobbies.
Regards

Im 51, and still play but not so much. my attention and patience span has waned quite a bit.
This age thing is quite a debate, i still play rock bass, and have just bought another motorbike, it doesnt matter what people think, life should be enjoyed:)

Im 54 next month and love my Iracing and have also clocked over 500 hours of Skyrm and finished dawnguard yesterday.

Life is too short so if somethings fun then do it.

Been gaming since I was a pup and PC gaming since Quake(probably still a pup). Im 26

I do not play as much as I used to. This mainly to do with my working hours now and that games are a bit 'samey' nowadays and I don't get the 'I cannot wait to get some to play whatever'

DayZ was the last game for a while to make me really want to get home and play. When Fifa 13 comes out on the xbox I will probably put a lot of hours into that to begin with also.

Age is just a number, 3 generations of my family are gamers. My grandad for example is/was the best Goldeneye player I have ever seen. 007folder with everything unlocked. I doubt I'd even be able to do that now.

I will always go and do things that involve interacting with other people ahead of gaming (unless things have already been arranged as I hate canceling on people even online) and year by year other things are pushing gaming down my list of priorities.

When I'm meeting new people nowadays I feel there is less of a stigma attached to gaming as there once was. This is probably to do with a) its more mainstream b) I'm more confident talking to people than when I was 18.

People can do what they want tbh. I'd never judge someone on how they spend their spare time

Well if your mrs / gf makes the statement "Arent you too old for gaming" I would reply "Arent you too old to spend hours doing your makeup to present your face to a once youthfull look"

I cant say you wont get kicked in the nutts, nor have i tried it myself but for internet hardman its quite acceptable ;)

Im 32 and dont plan on stopping

You lot are old :p I'm in my late twenties, married with a baby son and I manage to find a couple of hours a week to socialise with friends online. Many of them live quite a distance away, so although we have regular meet-ups our online social interaction keeps us in touch.

How about the practicalities of being an older gamer?

Anyone in their 40's or 50's finding it hard to be competitive in certain genre's like FPS games, perhaps due to deteriorating reaction times? Have you switched to other types of game where strategy is more important than reactions, MMO's or RTS games perhaps?

I play quite a bit of BF3 and while I do pretty well, I'm definitely not as fast as I used to be. I have to try to compensate by being more disciplined about small things, like scoping up around corners, trying to anticipate enemy movements and positions, etc. I can't just run around without thought racking up frags any more.

FPS games were ruined for me when they started all this achievement stuff.

Playing MOHAA you had the same guns to choose from now it seems that you only get the good stuff if you can rack up 100+ hours of gametime making these FPS games more difficult for people who simply don't have the time to get these unlocks.

Apart from that it's still fun to play FPS.

I feel like I'm missing out sometimes by not having children. But honestly I don't like the way the world is heading right now, so in a way I'm glad.

You aren't kids are a PITA!

I love my son but still long for the stress free days pre kid!

Well it's one of those things which grinds my gears "do what makes you happy" life just is not that simple.

I think the point is that you're venturing a little outside the scope of the thread.

If you want to talk about peoples hobbies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, then can you take it to a different thread please?

I started online gaming (FPS mainly) when I was 15 (27 now), and met a couple of grandpa's in their late 60s to early 70s playing and they were surprisingly better than a lot of the younger guys. Me, I'll stop playing when I stop enjoying it, which I suspect will be right around the time I die. :)
