How on earth do you go caseless?

I was careless for some time years ago, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Google phones. The Huawei Google phone was the slipperiest with it's full metal body.

However I then changed jobs and the work trousers have pockets that when you sit down the phone slips out, usually it just sits on the seat, but when jumping out the work van on jobs I found that the phone went flying. I also had issues while working on cars laying on the floor the phone would keep fallout of pockets regardless of what I was wearing.

The phone always goes in my left pocket.

Lucky none of my phones ever smashed, but they did start getting beat up, So I ended up getting a case for all my phones since.

I do find them annoying though, no matter how slim the case you get is the phone always feels significantly thinner without it.

outside of the house I don't - Certainly I put a screen protector on the front the second I unbox, and while I have no issues with carrying it around caseless in the house, outside I'm a little more unsure of my ability to keep things un-dropped.

I've never done it, and the amount of times I've dropped a phone or it has slipped out of a pocket has justified my decision 100 times!

I use a case, mainly because I get an upgrade of my phone every two years through work and so I like to keep them in good nick for resell value (in fact my current 14 is about to be replaced and apart from the battery being at 90% you would be hard pressed to tell it had been used once I put it back in its box). I will admit I also like the case type I use as they have a nice soft back.

So so much nicer without a case!

I never drop my phone or find it slippery, and this is coming from a man with the clammiest/dampest hands in the word.

iPhone 15 Pro Max here, but I do have big hands too which I imagine helps.

Also find with a case they just feel so bulky.

Well this thread proved quite interesting!

I'm still surprised by those who say they don't use a case and don't find hold the phone difficult. Every time I pass an Apple Store and look at the latest 16 Pro Max, I find it incredibly slippery in my hand and plain hard to hold. Maybe I just have slippery hands :)

I will say that phones over the years have gotten substantially grippier, but I wish in this era of squared edges that they'd design some actual grip into the phones. That said when they were all polished glass they were a nightmare for me. as with all things though, it's a matter of being careful - if I'm indoors I generally don't use a case, but if I'm out and about I put a case on.

Thing is they still are polished glass, at least the backs of the latest iPhones are, and that's what makes them slippery for me. Maybe it's because I tend to have my fingers on the back of the phone and rely on them gripping the rear surface, rather than all the way round and gripping at both sides?

I have to say that I don't find the phones today as bad as say my samsung galaxy S7 or S8 which were terrible for grip. I do grip the phone on the sides primarily unless I'm responding, in which case I cradle it. I'm not a one handed user.

How is it even possible to grip a phone by the back surface, it's smooth and flat.

If this is how people hold their phones, no wonder they think they're slippery and drop them.

You're holding it wrong

I think it's because I'm used to one-handed operation. When doing this, you have to let the phone rest on your fingers so your thumb can reach the screen. Gripping it at the sides means you stand no chance of reaching the whole screen with your thumb and thus have to use two hands.

Guess a lot depend on whether you're a one or two-handed user.
