How plausible is this?

Also very close to where @Malevolence lives is this memorial to a Tram driver who drowned in the Canal, the Canal used to be where all the grass is.
Timothy Trow was his name.

Right opposite the street where my Nan & Grandad lived for 60 odd years, Regent St.

That's a great site, look up the Workhouses bit with Block A, B and C on it.
Block A was a school while Block C was the Workhouse.

I was across your old building, A block, the other day. Those those damn wonky stone staircases still catch me out.

A gang pushed a man into the Rochdale canal which is only 3 ft deep and he drowned. Even if you can't swim you wouldn't need to in 3 ft deep water. anyone else find this story a bit spurious or is there something im missing about the depth of the canal at the undercroft part of the Rochdale canal in Manchester? It's not explicitly stated it happened there but it's been implied in other articles.

During the recent heatwaves around 20 people have died in water now that should give you a clue.
We may think "Ok look the water must be warm" but your body hitting cold water can cause major problems immediately especially when you're not expecting it.
A couple of years ago I was in Lanzarote on a beautiful hot sunny day, I never noticed nobody else was in the pool so jumped in, I was one second away from screaming for help but just managed to get to the steps.
That's why it's best to always dip your toes in first.

Yet wasn't so cold-shocked to repeatedly shout "I can't swim"

I've spoken to narrowboaters and they seem to have no issue standing up on the canal bottom when they're fixing their boat props...
There's your answer then, not sure why you'd expect a better one from a load of people who almost certainly have less experience of canals than people who actually use them.
