On my street, a Chinese family lives about two doors away and they seem to be really quiet. Probably nervous due to the language barrier.

Anyway, as I'm interested in languages and love learning them, I thought that maybe approaching this family and asking for help in return for my help with their English.

The thing is, going to someones house and just saying/offering something like that has to be very strange. :p I'm not sure how exactly, if at all, I would approach them and make such a comment or request, as I don't want to be jumping to conclusions.

So how do I go about it? If at all? :p

Wait until a national Chinese Holiday then bring them something traditional. They'll be suprised, hopefully in a good way. But i don't think there are anything in March, i think there's one in the summer, its to do with some dragon shaped rowing boat racing thing (no, not the Oxbridge thing !). On that day, Chinese make these Steamed leaf wrapped rice thing with Chicken and mushrooms inside. The legend has something to do with a dragon, someone drowned, and throwing those wrapped rice thing into the river to feed The dragon so it wouldn't eat the person drowning or something. My Myth/Legend on this is very rusty but it is a national holiday. The one after that, would be the Full moon in August in the Chinese calendar, Something call the Moon cake is eaten. You can get them in Chinese Supermarkets and Bakery. Buy them a Tin of that to surpise them.

Or just turn up at the door and introduce yourself, they are still people :p

Or even on an English holiday, they're perhaps eager to learn about our culture too.

Probably best not to start on Friday tbh.

Nice idea Raymond! :)

I can't just turn up and introduce myself, considering the purpose of me doing so.

When I was at Sic's he said that to his brother and he didn't even realise what a loser he was til after he'd said it.

When he was at my house, he got undressed in front of me ;).

On second thoughts, that isn't such a good thing! :p

i agree, if they have just moved in, they maybe nervous or whatever so be polite and make them feel good etc and invit them to your house they may not speak perfect english so you could try teaching it to them and learn chinese in process..

Write "Welcome to England, love Phil" on a piece of paper, tie it to a brick and throw it throught their front window. Poke your head through said busted window and ask for your brick back. Quite an ice breaker I think.

White flag on a stick, wave it clearly as you approach the door :D
