They don't always ask you to, I recently got a G5 replaced and still have the old G5. Could probably fix it actually, I think it's just the cable that's faulty.
They ask for their top end products and the revolution is their most expensive mouse. I think it's a newer thing since a lot of people were calling up and claiming for things they'd never even owned and getting brand new replacements sent out. I didn't have to do anything when my m700 stopped charging but when the replacement revolution broke they asked me to damage it so it was visably unusable.
