Who said anything about doing it in your head? There's nothing wrong with writing down your working. Besides, that's the sort of thing a 12 year old should be able to do, so long as you can remember numbers there should be no issue doing it in your head.

, I don't think we were ever taught what an onomatopoeia is or the other things despite me going to a decent school. I didn't do too well on the vocab test either but that wasn't surprising.
