How to add extra security to this uPVC door - with pic!

We have an older uPVC door in the kitchen, it locks by turning the key (not by pushing up the handle and then turning the key). What i would like to do is make it a bit more secure, ideally with just a straight bolt at the top and bottom as we only use the door a few times a month. The only problem is the door sticks out from the frame as can be seen below:

So sticking a straight bolt on it would look a bit crap, i'd either have to drill a hole in the wall so the straight bolt would go in there and it goes across an inch or so before it gets in to the wall. Or i could stick some wood or something on the frame so it would bring the "receiver" bit of the straight bolt to the same level as the door...both options i reckon will look a proper bodge.

Has anyone got any clever ideas or know of any different bolt/lock types i could use for this?

And before you say buy a new door - i'm too tight for that...and i like the simplicity of a bolt!

Tarp :D

you could always secure 2 metal mounts on the wall that allow you to stick a chunk of timeber blocking the door from opening and pretend your house is your castle :P

easier to fill in a few holes on the wall than it is to stop a pvc door looking like crap with nail holes in it

There are number of door stop type of "wedge and block" devices you can secure doors with without drilling anything in PVC door.

Huh i did not think of that...not a bad idea though. Seriously, i could pull it off next heavy rain we get i could sort a moat out if i get digging sharpish.

Hmmm only ones i can find are literally like normal door stops that would hold a door open, problem is with this door it's aboot 2/3 inches from the floor which is tiled and there isn't really anywhere for the wedge to "wedge" if you see what i mean...

'Cranked offset Barrel Bolt' and Google is what you need.

I had a look at these but unless im missing something they are offset the wrong way, as there is no room in the frame to mount the bolt it would have to be mounted on the door, and these offset ones would just make the bolty bit further away from the frame...

A burglar would just simply push the window pane unit out rather than tackle any locks so dont bother wasting your time. A good kick would simply push the full window unit from its fixings, they really aren't very secure at all.

first im not a burglar but i could very east take a chisle and remove that glas pain.

so a better door or a ugly internal door with steal lats 8" apart to cover it.

even then if i wanted in i would just remove a window,

Looking at this my immediate thoughts are that as others have said its entirely not secure and if you want to change that you need a new door, but im a fan of the moat idea :)

Hawker

more motors but i had a old volvo and the door lock was busted i never fixed it coss if (i forgot to remove the stereo front panle then the window would just get smashed),

just get a dog that does not like sausage.

Wrong. The newer PVC doors and windows are incredibly hard to kick through. I have seen heavy built guys trying to kick them in and falling back onto their ass when they fail.

Also people saying they could remove the beads and take out the glass dont seem to realise the beads are on the inside. On the older externally glazed doors and windows you could just flip out the beads with a knife and be in in seconds. Even the double sided "security" tape was useless as you just put a glass sucker on the corner and pull and even mr muscle could remove the glass pane.

What a burglar would do is bump or snap the lock barrel. Sash jammers would certainly help stop them. But if it is a big pane of glass in the back door then they will simply break the toughened glass and they are in in less than a minute and it makes very little noise. The best security upgrade you could add would be laminated glass to replace the toughened.

EDIT: Just read that back and it sounds dodgy :p, I have been to a lot of houses that have been burgled to put right the damaged doors or windows, so get to know what the weak points are.

the strongest door is a soild wood with a steal plate that opens out ways even the police will strugle to get throug that. long as the door jam is solid as well.
