How to cancel TV Licence?

you are under no legal obligation to tell them anything.
just phone them up, tell them to cancel it and cancel the DD.

Spot on, just cancel the payment. If anyone ever turns up at your door asking to see proof that you dont have a tv or anything like that, just close the door. You dont have to prove anything.

Once phone call man!

I have just decided I won't be needing one once I move to my new property either. I have sorted the declaration to say I don't require one.

If your streaming via BBC iPlayer you DON'T need one. Live streams you NEED one.

I know this is a strange area but does it not depend on What you are viewing iplayer? For instance if you are viewing iplayer through an "app" on your Xbox then you can only find previously aired content but if you have a web browser of any sort with internet access then you can actually now stream BBC live.

If you are watching a live broadcast you need a license regardless of platform.

If you are not watching a live broadcast (ie. on demand services) you do not need a license.

There are further particular exceptions such as students using parental licenses in conjunction with battery powered devices but these will not apply to the vast majority of people.

Just cancel the direct debit from your bank. You will get some reminder letters but if you are moving you can ignore them. Also when you get into your new property you will get quite a lot of letters requesting payments. They will be addressed to `House Owner` or occupier you can open them but its not really important. They will bug the hell out of you and you will get visits from the enforcement people. You can phone them and tell them you dont require a license and that you withdraw there assumed access rights to your property so if they do call at your house you can take them to court for tresspassing becuase they have had there rights of access to your property removed. It also becomes a fun game to record them everytime they come to your house. The only thing that can get you a fine in court is you actually admitting that you watch TV without a licience so never tell them anything just decline to comment and excort them off the premises most of the time they will just leave when they see the camera ( there is no such thing as a TV detection van) One guy acutally had something like 9 visits in as many weeks and is in the process of suing them for harrasment.

They still owe me about 40 quid from when i left the UK. I just phoned them up and told them i was moving and didnt need one any more. They cancelled my DD but i never got my refund.

I thought the terms of the TV licence were being changed so that anything on demand is now covered too so smug gits can't just say they only use iplayer

Interesting thread and I might look at doing the same. I have literally, no word of a lie, watched TV since July when I was home sick. Cancelled Sky years ago so only have the terrestrial channels which are laughably crap. I do watch stuff but it's all on Youtube or downloaded.

As far as I was aware you had to pay it if you had the MEANS to watch live TV, so if you own a TV or PC you gotta pay as others have mentioned you possess the ability to watch live TV.

Unfortunately, 'I promise' won't cut it?

?

Nope completely wrong. You can own all the equipment. The offence is when you watch it.

If you only watch catch-up services online, then you don’t need a licence. For example, you don’t need one to use BBC iPlayer, or ITV player, to catch up on programmes after they have been shown on TV.

If you only use a digital box with a hi-fi system or another device which can only produce sound and can't display TV programmes, you do not need a TV Licence.

No TV? Don't watch or record television programmes as they're being broadcast on any device? The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
No TV Licence is needed if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch programmes on your computer after they have been shown on TV. If this is the case, please let us know, as this helps us to keep our database up to date and means you won't receive the standard*letters we send to unlicensed addresses.*

And so forth, they have deliberately updated their website to make it less clear.

For those who are suggesting to just cancel the DD, it might get ugly if TV licensing tries to chase you for the 'unfunded' months. Definitely best to tell them first on the number that Aardvark gave out on post #27.

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast.

That's what it says on the TV Licensing website.

They can't make somebody pay for a licence if all they use the TV for is playing on their Xbox. Of coure, if the TV is hooked up to an aerial or STB it's going to be pretty hard to convince them that you don't watch TV.
