I have a G965 chipset intel board which has NCQ support. I'm using Vista and got Intel Matrix Storage Console installed. It shows my Samsung drive as NCQ supported, but does this mean its enabled by default. I can't find anywhere that lets me turn it on or off.

Any help would be greatful.

Thanks

I have the same problem with XP, Intel Matrix Storage Manager says NCQ is supported but no option to turn on or off.

I've been hunting for a solution for ages, if I find one I'll post here.

BTW right click on your green volume name gives you writeback cache options, no NCQ options though.

I thought the system had to be configured as AHCI in the bios prior to your OS installation.

The Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is a hardware mechanism that allows software to communicate with Serial ATA devices such as host bus adapters which are designed to offer features not offered by Parallel ATA controllers besides higher speeds, such as hot-plugging and native command queuing. The specification details a system memory structure for computer hardware vendors in order to transfer data between system memory and the device.

Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS will spawn a 0x7B BSoD STOP error on installations of Windows XP where AHCI/RAID drivers for that system's chipset are not installed. Switching to AHCI requires installing new drivers before changing BIOS settings. Some later versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 include limited AHCI/SATA support

Not sure about Intel chipsets but with NVidia it can be turned on and off in device manager from the SATA controller properties.

I'd recommend turning it off though, it can quite often cause more harm than good - I got a 20% improvement in transfer rates from my RAID5 array by turning it off.
