How to cook a jacket potato?

 really, we need basic cooking in schools, thats just dreadfull.

Best way
180 degrees 1hr30

Quick nice way
7mins microwave full power
Then 10 mins in a hot oven to crisp skin

Quick way

8-9mins microwave full power.

Remember to pierce the skin or cut a cross in it, otherwise it may exploded.
You can test when it is done by sliding a normal eating knife into it, little resistance = done.

Delia says shove them in an oven preheated to 190°C for 1hr 45mins - 2 hours depending on the size of the potato.

EDIT - Beaten to it by someone who answered more in depth and actually knows how to do it instead of doing a google search

Even better way, wrapped in tin foil, chuck it into a coal fire for about 2 hours.

Oh, stab holes in it with a fork !

usual heat (180 on the fan assisted one down stairs for me)

coated with a bit of butter and some salt and pepper (edit: as someone else mentioned pierce the skins, otherwise they might explode, makes a right mess of your oven)

about an hour and half or so, depends how big the spuds are

for a slight change about 2/3 of the way through cooking, take the tat's out cut in half scoop out the middle, mix with ham and cheese, refil the skins with the mixture and put back in for the rest of the time :D

Clean it up under some cold water and cut any manky bits out with a pointed vegetable knife. Cut a cross in the top (or a line round the edge if that’s your preference). Put in oven at about 200 degrees C, until done (about an hour, depending on the size). You can check for when its done by sticking a fork into it. It should be reasonable soft all the way to the middle.

Don’t cook in the microwave at all if you want it to be remotely nice, and don’t put butter or anything on before, that goes on after.

agreed! I can do basic things like spag bol, stir fry, but not much else :(

ok next question... what do you have on yours? Im thinking butter, tuna mayo and cheese

will foil make it taste better?

when i make jackets using the microwave oven method
there is no comparison to the out door vendors with there big ovens and tatoes in foil

edit: the only filling for jacket potatoes is chili con carne + cheese

Get a spud, wash and clean it, dry it, ***** with a fork. Drizzle some olive oil over it, rub the olive oil in nicely then briskly rub some sea salt over into the skin.

Bake in oven @ 200 degrees until done. Usually at least an hour depending on size

Never, ever use the microwave! It will come out all soggy and horrible :p.

I had one made for me by a very lovely chef last week, he put it in a tray with some salt and oil so the skin went crispy, but I'm not sure exactly what he did, as I wasn't watching. The easy way is just to wrap it in foil and put it in the oven for 90-120mins.

Thats the way I do it, the olive oil gets the skin nice and crispy. Lovely stuff :D

No the foil is for open fires to stop them burning and to keep the water in.

I usually have
1) tuna mayo made with some diced up pickled gherkins in it
2) beans and cheese
3) cheese and coleslaw
4) cheese and a chicken oven steak

That's my normals

Scrub said potat....then oil rubbed all over....next salt on top and rub all over...stab!! microwave 5mins....oven a further 10! you wont do it any other way once you've done it that way trust me
