How to deal with the terminally offended

could it be related to the amount of people, the diversity of people, struggling to make order from the chaos. The idea of tolerance, instead of acceptence.

is it as simple as perspective, and not taking the time to think about how others might view your opinion. Perhaps its just a lack of thinking before speaking.

Humans, generally speaking, have less to worry about these days that they did even 50 years ago. This has given them far more time to worry about other things that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things, except in their own heads.

Twitter and its ilk has also brought about new ways to instantly communicate just how offended you are that, for example, a very clever man with far more to contribute to society than you, chooses to dress like IronWarrior's bedroom just as he becomes one of the first humans to help land a man-made craft on a comet, ten years after it departed this planet.

ON A ****ING COMET!!!!!

It needs to stop. So there.

What can I do about it? Write to feminist groups and start a public Twitter war? Write to my local MP? Absolutely nothing? Maybe the no (sorry, feminists) have a point and I am just a white male with nothing to worry about because nobody's mean to me?

I think feminists (and other equality activists) have their place in society because we have not achieved true equality yet. There are statistical anomalies in many fields (science, sports, politics, management) which can't be explained without taking sexism, racism, homophobia or xenophobia into account.

You want it to stop, good for you but guess what? It won't stop. Not when 80% of engineers are male, despite no significant biological advantages for males compared to women. Not when 99.99% of footballers and CEO's are heterosexual.

I respect that scientist and his team but I can't ignore the fact that there's a negative bias in his field for 50% of the population on this planet. That's a huge loss of brilliant minds that go to waste and never reach their potential because patriarchal societies teach them they should be in the kitchen or naked in men's magazines.

Yeah, apologies, I went off on a tangent :D It just concerns me that a lot of people are getting in trouble and even ending up in prison for what amounts to 'thoughtcrime' with the poor implementation and interpretations of the ridiculous 'Anti-Trolling' Laws and guidelines the UK Govt. have rushed in. We definitely don't need more of that.

no worries, I share the same sentiments re: thought crime etc... which is why I think freedom of speech needs to be protected more along the US 2nd Amendment lines

Katie Hopkins, for example, tweeted some rather unsavoury things about Palestinians recently... she's a **** for sure but some of the twitter outrage involved people calling for her to be arrested over it. You'd simply not get those sorts of calls in the US - free speech is fundamental to them, yes you'd get the outrage still but everyone over there is well aware that you're free to air your views whereas over here there is increasingly the expectation that actually the police should do something about things you don't like.

this was the story that I thought was silly today:

Image of a woman tied up, on the back of a pick up truck prompted police complaints

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-30134107

"These concerns were also raised on social media, which prompted a number of similar complaints to West Yorkshire Police.

"It was clear that a number of people had found the image offensive and had been alarmed and distressed by it being displayed in public.

"The registered keeper of the vehicle was traced and spoken to by officers and made aware of the concerns raised and the potential for the continued display of the image to be treated as a public order offence."

It is that last bit that bothers me, just like the police ordering a woman to remove some ornamental pigs from her windowsill... frankly they've got no business to do so just because people have derived some 'offence' from it.

Whoever decides to have a vinyl of a kidnapped woman stuck to the tailgate of their pickup should be compelled to keep it on by law so everyone can see that they are a complete tit who should be avoided.

Feminists are getting ridiculous. Me and my boss got straight up accused of being rapists while helping the extremely drunk receptionist from our office on a work night out. This is how stupid things are getting. Men trying to help a vulnerable woman get out right accused of this stuff in the street. Disgusting.

1) A guy, representing ESA, wore a shirt featuring portraits of women on TV.
2) Some women, including quite a few embarrassed fellow scientists, voice their opinion that it was a poor choice of shirt.
3) He apologises.

End of story.

I don't see the problem here. Aren't women allowed an opinion now?

step 3 is the problem, he shouldnt have to apologise for his. Many women chose to be seen in this way, are they supposed to now start apologising to other women aswell?. should the people expecting him to apologise, apologise to the people that were not offended for being offended? it gets silly real quick.

I agree wholeheartedly. Funny how it's always blokes getting demonised. Try to do something 'good' like you did and instantly you get labelled as a potential rapist?!? It's got to the stage where as a guy you dare not help a female out for fear of rape accusations or help a child lost in a shopping centre find its' parents for fear of ones of being a paedophile. It saddens me that we have such a reactionary 'label' blame culture.

He didn't have to apologise, he chose to apologise. He's obviously a decent guy who made an honest error of judgement. End of story.

The rest of what you're suggesting didn't happen so it's a moot point.

Guy drops a man-made thing on a comet whilst wearing an anime t-shirt = RAD

Guy orders anime daily from Japan and pretends that they are his children/wife/both = BAD
