how to do chckdisk out of windows

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that
you want to check.

2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.

3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

4. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery
of bad sectors check box.

5. Click Start.

I have already done scandisk in XP, just wondering if chckdisk /r that I have heard of would make any difference or give me any other options that scandisk doesnt.

Its only for a storage drive not a system drive.

The command chkdsk allows you to check the disk for bad sectors and recover them, chckdisk /r is for recovery of bad sectors and chckdisk /f is to find and report bad sectors.
(/f /r - find bad sectors, recover information from bad sectors and fix errors on the disk)
You could run chckdisk and then defrag the drive, it wont do any harm ..

Hi, there are two ways of performing a chkdsk command;

The easy way:
-Goto "Start > Run..." then type in "cmd".
-Then type in "chkdsk /f /r d:" (if the drive is labelled "D:")
Then run that command and wait for it to finish.

The hard way involves using the windows XP install CD but there's no point me going into that if you don't need to do it :)

Hope that helps,

Banjo ;_;

start >run
type cmd
hit return
type in chkdsk c: /R

For full parameters type in chkdsk /?

It will say windows cannot run because the volume is in use by another process , hit Y (to check on bootup)

When it does the scan , it will display the results (sometimes its very quick on screen) so go when windows loads up:
right click my computer
select manage
go into system tools
click on event viewer
Click on system (if there is any faulty sectors it will report here (source will say i think "disk")
