How to get a 'decent' job at 16 and still in school

I started in retail, got bored then set up my own mobile DJ business for sixthform parties in colleges and schools around the area as everyone charged so much money for it at the time. Soon after that i was djing in clubs and bars with regular residency right up until i went to uni. I earned more in 1 night djing than i did working nearly two whole weekends in a supermarket on £6 an hour :) just a thought

I did my bronze medallion, life savers course, first aid and swimming teachers course at 16, hence got job at local sports center as swimming teacher, lifeguard and attendant, I had best after school job in school back then. Possibly the best job I ever had.

All these suggestions have been amazing I will go out next week when I have the chance as I'm pretty busy and I will apply EVERYWHERE then let you guys know how I get on. Thanks for all the support and help and if you think of anything else please leave your suggestions :DD

Oh the only allowances I get is ones because I'm in care and that I can only spend on clothes. Which I enjoy doing hahah.

When I was 16/17 I started my own business doing gaming servers and dedicated solutions. I didn't do it for the money, I did it for the experience knowing that having something like that and being proficient in it on my CV would get me noticed. I'm now 26 doing software development and that bit of experience when I was younger meant everything in getting part time and full time work from there on.

If you have the time and a little bit of extra cash/friends who have similar interests then get together and do something that'll help you out in the long run!

I worked in hospitality at a football stadium. The pay wasn't the best I could have got, but the shifts were extremely flexible, I was on a list of preferential staff so I got to pick my shifts a few hours earlier than most people. This meant I could pretty much work whenever I wanted in whatever role I wanted.
So I worked in waiting, wine waiting, kitchen roles, set up and bar work. In teams between 2 to 200, often in positions of responsibility leading groups of up to 6.
All my friends at other companies had to quit in order to study for exams, I just dropped my hours to 0 for a while. Oh and tips are nice :)

I doubt knowing how to pour a pint or set up a 2000 seat restaurant will come in useful in the future, but the variation in work and leadership experience has given me loads of good stories for interviews.

One of my mates at uni did web development for a jewellers. Jr continued doing this at uni and whilst he is still studying he hasn't touched student loan at all, has loads of IT experience and a company car. So good jobs are possible :p

I just had an idea I should have thought of a long time ago and just ask down at my rugby club if they have any bar work as it gets busy on match days.

Usually bar work in 18+, although you could probably collect glasses / clean glasses.

At 16, I'd suggest what aptbx said, that's good advice, other than that though, Supermarkets and resturants can be great, bonus of resturants is you can pull in tips too :).

Usually most 16 y/o get retail work, there's lots of jobs as peak times is when they're not at school but salaries aren't great.

If you can get a job in something you're interested in it makes work a lot easier.

I used a local temp agency to find stuff during holidays, call center, supermarket, other retail, and a bar at 18. Was dead easy to find stuff, not particularly taxing jobs.
