How to get good cheap breakdown cover?

I'm pretty sure no break down cover provider will give you a full package for under £60 over the phone!

Of course they will if you are an existing customer about to leave for the biggest competitor who is offering a package at that price.

Otherwise why do they even have a retentions team rather than a 'Press 1 to auto cancel' option :D

Oh? When my next renewal comes through, I will personally hold you responsible when they turn around and say they cannot lower the quote any further.

The only car related service provider I can easily get big deals on is car insurance, for which Elephant is mostly excellent.

Don't autoaid charge for call outs or something? And then u have to claim it back?
I am a little dubious of lesser known companies. I might try quidco for any AA or RAC deals

In theory they arrange the recovery truck, you pay, then claim it back. In practice I've called them out 3 times, and not had to pay anything.

I know people who have had to pay and reclaim though, and it's always been fine.

They just use local recovery firms, much like the big companies do sometimes if they don't have one of their own vehicles nearby.

Nationwide's flex plus account offers very good breakdown cover for yourself and any cars in the household. That costs £10 a month, plus you get travel and mobile insurance and a few other services, on top of 3% interest up to £2500. If you can put that money in there, the account benefits essentially cost £45 a year.

Nationwide breakdown cover will only take your car to the nearest garage. If you break down 100 miles from home and you want it taken back home, they charge £2 a mile return, so £400

Not so.

"If the fault or damage cannot be repaired at the local repairers by the end of the working day on which the breakdown occurred, and the breakdown occurred more than a ¼ of a mile from your home address, we will transport your vehicle, you and up to 7 passengers to a destination of your choice in the UK (we will not pay for any other recoveries)"

On the startrescue site it has roadside assistance/recovery up to 10 miles then underneath nationwide recovery? On the 4 and 5 star policy. I'm presuming they charge after 10 miles? I work 25 miles from home so could do with there being no mileage cap for towing to a destination.
There has to be small print and clauses in these cheaper policy's otherwise how are they able to offer the same service as the big 3 but at Half the cost?

According to StartRescue's Frequently Asked Questions:

If you have purchased our 1 Star breakdown cover and require a vehicle recovery further than your 10 mile entitlement, we will gladly take you to your chosen destination, but will require payment for any additional mileage. Payment must be made over the phone by credit/debit card at the time assistance is required.

Never had an issue with Green Flag, only issue is the premium goes up with the age of the car. Only used them once in 9 years of owning the jalopy so got maximum NCD on it too.

I've had them out a few times and as you say sometimes you pay and reclaim sometimes you don't the reclaim process was smooth and efficient so no complaints from me and at 45 quid to cover us both it's a bargain!

You have to pay for the repair, my car has a seven year warranty so I want it taken to my garage, 100s miles away.

was using green flag so much cheeper than aa/rac for the same service. But now have free aa full cover with the servicing from ford. Also have breakdown cover with my nation wide flex acout at costs £10 a month but has other benefits so worth looking into the bank accounts as well

Yes but if they can repair it same day, it means it will be pretty cheap anyway, plus you won't lose your day going back 100s of miles for a quick repair.

If they can't, you can then choose to take it back to the garage of your choice.

Not always. A repair could cost 100s, and you have to pay, if you refuse your stuck. If you break down at 6am you could be in that garage miles from home all day.
