How to get in as an IT Technician?

I got into IT by doing a competancy test, got the job over 250 other people most of whom had IT related degrees :D I have only minor electrical engineering qualificated and only a standard grade in computing!

I'm now 8 years later network manager, still have no qualifications, not even been on a software training course. I'll have to start soon if I want to move up the ladder anymore though.

If you had talent people will notice you, a vast majority of IT can be self taught, people who put too much weight on qualifications are fools, yes they can be an indicator but I'd rather hire someone who taught themselves and then train them. They have the raw skill and talent to be far far better than course trained monkeys.

Just from my observations of people in the last IT department I worked in ;)

The IT people in my company keep going on about their move to San, what actually does it do in laymans terms? We currently have Oracle, does it sit on the server and manage files or something?

Wikipedia can help but it may go over your head.

Moving onto a SAN is when instead of using the disk drives in your server you buy a big disk array that can hold up to thousands of disks depending on the model. Out of these disks you present storage to the server and it uses that. Your servers still stay there, it's just the disks are removed or not used.

It means better utilisation, no more worries about scalability and better performance among many other things.

Now, the real 'SAN' factor is that it is on it's own network. Not an IP network, a Fibre Channel network capable of 2GB/s (4GB too nowadays). FC networks basically encapsulate SCSI commands and send it off.

This diagram explains it pretty well

At the top you have users. Then the IP network which connects to the servers. The servers connect to the Storage Area Network switches via FC HBA's. The SAN Switches connect into the Storage arrays.

Amazing how you said 'think EMC' and not 'think HP' :D

I know :p but EMC are only famous for storage where as with HP storage is just one arm of a massive organisation ( reading the other day that in terms of hardware sales HP are now bigger then IBM  )

Off on XP12000 training course tomorrow , 9 days in Las Vegas and California , it's a hard life :D

Actually let me go over your training for you.

Welcome!! Meet the XP12000!!!! It's actually made by HDS!!! What's that? No, they don't sell that many either :( :(

Yes i'm a cheeky sod :D

I'm looking to hire an IT support/technician type person soon. What sort of salaries should I be looking to pay? (saves me searching round the job site)

Sounds like one hell of a job you have there.

Did you work your way up in HP?

Im not really supirsed that HP have started to sell more stuff than IBM. HP servers are very well made.

What LEA do you work for? Never heard of this level system my self perhaps its not the same in Nottinghamshire where I am.

I work for a school in Northern Ireland. Our system for support staff must be different to that of England etc.

That's about what I was thinking. I'm only looking for quite a lowish level person, somebody who can start off doing pretty routine, mundane stuff until they've got a bit more experience.

heh, the only reason the cisco and unix jobs pay more is because there is no real pretty GUI and a Wizard to get things going. People run at the site of command line.

The CISCO stuff just needs good knowledge of tcp, routing and firewalling - it's not that difficult.

I spent a year on university placement working for another school as an ICT Technician level 1 - whilst I don't particularly agree with university as a whole, I have it to thank for setting me above all the other applicants for my job (the one I have just accepted).

I know that its a situation different to the O/Ps but I thought I'd share my path into the ICT technician job.

what quals/exp?
