Hi all

One of my good mate works in the trade sector doing work such as plastering,
carpentry, etc. recently his boss has had to let him go as work has dried up.
He now thinking of starting up on his own but he dosnt know how to advertise and promote himsef.

Where are the best ways to advertise and promote himself
He doesnt mind spending money but as he starting up on his own his a bit confused and doesnt wanna get conned into spending to much

Thanks in advanced

Leaflet drops can be effective. Yellow Pages is about £800 per year for the book and Yell online is more on top.

Starting up can be as simple as do a good job and get recommended. Always ask your customer if they know someone else who wants work done...

All of the above really

Business cards out to everyone he knows/comes into contact with, word of mouth, yellow pages / dentons, name and details liveried up on his van.

Also might be worth him asking some other tradesmen to put work his way and vice versa (e.g. we've got a good local builder so when we wanted an electrician we asked him who'd he use)

This.

Plus word of mouth is the best advertising, so a good job must done. :D

Look at the local council for trusted trader schemes.

He could try ratedpeople.com

I've used a roofer and an aerial fitter from there.

You would be amazed at the jobs my brother has managed to get just through chatting with someone he is doing work for. And as said, if he does a good job for someone, they will probably mention it to their friends and so on. It is sometimes worth taking just small jobs too - even if you're only there for a few hours. It's work, plus someone else knows your name.

I could be in the same position soon. Getting sick of working my arse off to put money in other peoples pockets.

I think the best thing would be to start off local. Maybe put cards up in shop windows and ask your local barbers to keep some cards and pass them on if anyone asks about a plasterer etc.

Then once he has done a few decent jobs the work should start coming in as more and more people will hopefully be recommending him to friends etc.

We had double glazing installed last September by a friend of the family, have since recommended him to 3 people for doing a good job/price, I know they've used him & also suggested him to some of their friends..

As already said, doing a good job & word of mouth go a long way.

As stated, go online and create some free business cards (Yes, there are sites that do this somewhere)

Word of mouth, create some small adverts that can go into shop windows on them bulletin board things.

And also, get into a local parish magazine or something? Or better yet the yellow pages if he can

There are some websites where people list jobs they want doing and y ou can quote a price etc, its a gd way of getting work by just beating out the competition
