How to install onboard LAN?

Try this: start/control panel/netowork connections then right click on local are connection and enable if that has not been done.

Ahh, well I didn't see the top bit :p As for the second bit, you just told hime to run IPCONFIG which would have got him nowhere without further instructions ;)

One thing I didn't mention was if the other machine gets its IP dynamically, leave the settings on your new machine to obtain automatically :)

Right, by the sounds of 'Detecting proxy settings', you first need to go into internet explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Remove the tick from the 'Use proxy server...' box and OK all windows then close IE. Then you need to go into network connections via control panel, double click the Local Area Network connection icon, then hit properties. Next highlight 'Internet Protocol' and click properties.

Now look at the output reading of IPCONFIG on your old machine and give your new machine the next address- for example if you old machine has 192.168.1.10, give your new machine 192.168.1.11, leave your subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 and set the gateway to your routers IP address. Oh yeah, set your DNS servers to match those on your old machine and you should be done :)

Here's what's wierd, the internet works on my old pc but doesn't show any numbers in the "internet protocol (TCP/IP)" properties.

Sorry, see the line above. Do the first bit of my post- take the tick out of the use proxy box then leave the last bit alone and you should be fine :)

EDIT: That bit...

There isn't a tick in that box though.

did you open up internet explorer - tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings (its a button)...

make sure that 'Automaticall detect settings' is checked, but nothing else!

are you using a router or a USB broadband modem on this computer??

It's an ethernet cable, but it's got a USB cross-over. NTL seem to recommend this. By the way, is the network set up when in "Control Panel" and then "Network Connections" it says "connected", like so

This is taken from my current pc but it says the same thing on the new pc.

From my ntl digital set top box, the cable is an ethernet. They recommend to use the cross-over to USB.

If anyone knows about setting up ntl internet please help me get past that VTrack Debugger thingy, it causes the installation of the broadband to crash. I remember this happened last year when I set it up on my current pc. Now it's doing it again with my new pc, I can't remember what I did to get past the problem though.

So does the NTL box come with a set of software/driver discs then? You shouldn't need drivers for an ethernet connection though I wouldn't of thought- they should be for the USB part

When it says 'Connected', it doesn't mean it's going to be active it just means there's something at the other end of it.

Will it let you do an IPCONFIG now on your new pc as I would guess that the NTL box has some sort of DHCP server in it. Start > Run > cmd.exe > enter > ipconfig /all > enter?

I've done that ipconfig /all and absolutely nothing gets posted, after I hit enter this gets posted:

IPCONFIG is not recognised as an internal or extrenal command, operable program or batch file.

if your using windows xp run the Setup a home or small office network under My Network Places

then press next then pick this
box1jn3.jpg

then this
box2op2.jpg

then next and next again then finish

reboot your pc and try your browser :)

Yeah i'm pretty sure the network is now installed, thanks everyone. Now I need to contact ntl tomorrow to know how to get rid of this error whilst installing my broadband.

<snip>

Don't. Quicker way would be to get the drivers only and create your own dialler using NTLs settings which you can get of any user in here that is kind enough who is on NTL to give you and you'll be up and running within an hour topps - that's adding any overhead time to get a cup of coffee ;)
