How to install onboard LAN?

I didn't think you needed to 'install' anything with ntl broadband? Don't you just attach the ethernet cable from the STB to your NIC and Bob's your uncle. That's what you do with the modem anyway. Don't use USB at all if you don't have to.

Nope, i've got the ethernet cable from my ntl digital set top box connected to the onboard LAN, when I open an internet page it can't be displayed. I got a cd with ntl to install the broadband and i'm sure I had this problem last year with my current pc. I think I phoned ntl and I got it sorted, so i'll have to do that with my new pc.

I seem to remember getting a CD with my ntl broadband too, when I only had a modem. I never used it though as it wasn't necessary. There are no drivers or software to install - the internet is always on and so long as your NIC drivers are installed properly and you haven't buggered about with any of the network settings in Windows, it should just work :)

Well it doesn't, i'm sure the network is fine, it says it's connected. I had this problem even with the NIC I bought last year. I'm using onboard LAN this time and still the same thing. I'll let ntl sort it, it's their fault.

if your using a new NIC aren't you supposed to register the MAC with TW / NTL otherwise they wont forward data to an unregistered MAC? its supposed to detect any new NIC's and set it up automatically under your account (you used to get a maximum of 5 registered MAC's i believe) but it doesnt always work...

might be worth a try ?? by the looks youve tried pretty much everything else

had this problem quite a few times setting up routers, usually you can just clone the MAC of the cable modem but its not that simple in this case....

i dare say if you tried your old nic it would work straight away :)

Hmm I used ntl for years and have never heard of that before. I used it with a number of different computers and it just worked.

You haven't done anything silly like connecting the USB and the ethernet cables at the same time I suppose.

yeah as mentioned it supposed to just "work" but its not fool proof by anymeans. the service has rather been hit and miss for me in the past. just a suggestion :)

I am basing all my comments on having only used a modem, not the STB - I gather the modem is superior. I think ntl used to supply you with a modem if you asked for one - I don't know if they'll still do that.

they should do, my mrs recently had the 3 for £30 package installed and whilst the guy was there i just asked if i could have a modem instead of running the bb through the STB, he sed sure and went and fetched one (came with a webstar to start with though so sent him back for a Moto SB ;) )

to reg the new nic just turn off your computer and stb, turn on the stb, wait a few minutes then boot your computer

I'm not that silly. ;)

I'm not using a network card, i'm using the onboard LAN. The same thing happens even with an NIC.

The network card is the onboard LAN, its just another name for it. After looking at this thread I advise you to get someone over who knows about networks.

hmm you could setup your nic like this

just change the x which is the last number of the router ip to any think from 2 to 255 but dont use the same ip as the routers box ip

not sure if there the ntl dns ips tho, im sure some 1 in here can tell you them

Nevermind chaps. I phoned NTL and all I had to do was open and internet page then go:

File > Open > start.ntl > enter

then it was the installation of the ntl broadband. :D

I'm all connected on my new pc now! Thanks everyone! :D
