Ok, i've an aging, yet perfectly working 24" samsung crt tv. The Mrs, in all her wisdom refuses to entertain the idea of getting or needing a new one because the current one is perfectly fine. To be honest, it's not even a case of having enough money or not (we do have enough money, as we're doing pretty well at the moment) - it's just a case of her thinking it's not necessary.

However, i obviously disagree, but haven't really raised the subject for quite some time now.

So if our current tv were to tragically pass away on us, my wife would have no problems in us getting a new one, because she does like to watch stuff occasionally and knows that me and the kids do as well.

So, as deceptive as it is, i feel that for the greater good i need to fake the death of my tv. So is there any SERIOUS suggestions that people might have? Please don't bother talking about sledge hammers / chucking out of windows / putting in the bath etc..thanks!

not true, most TVs have degauss coil running around the tube that demagnetizes the aperture grill mesh thing when you switch them on.

i would put a 'dry joint' fault on the RF input or something.. would make some nice interference (or if your wife not to clever loosen the RF connector itself)

if on a scart I dunno....

Rub it with magnets?

First thought was this. Switch on and put a magnet next to the TV. You should start seeing odd colours and patterns on the screen. Leave it there for a while and this will continue for a while after the magnet is removed.

Agreed. It depends on how old the TV is though. Yes if it automatically degausses then you could be stuck........ Or slide a magnet under the TV where it currently sits at the moment?

Sprinkle iron filings into it and switch on?

Strong magnet will quickly kill the tube if you rub it on the screen when it's on. Cool multicolour light show :D

Sounds like a waste of a good telly to me though. Why not see if someone else wants it and just turn up one day with your new flatscreen or whatever?

Unplug the scart lead worked with my girlfriend
Why isnt Channel 4 working? oh its broke :D

Chuck a class of coke down the back of it whilst its off and when the missus turns it on she will know you were right in wanting a new tv.

Buy a universal remote and stick it down the side of your seat, then when she's half way through her favorite soap, just keep turning the TV off every few minutes. :D
