how to make an old crt tv appear 'on the way out'...?

To be honest, if you came home with a big shiny new tv for her to watch big brother and eastenders on, she wouldn't complain one bit. Just do it and tell her you wanted to treat you both.

Normally I would come up with some imaginative solution like installing a mini video player inside the TV so that it displays nothing but Songs of Praise on a loop, and you saying something like "Oh no, looks like the tellys gone down with that Songs of Praise fault thats going round then". But this instance is clearly a case of you go out, buy a new telly and install it. Your missus will get the hump for all of 10 minutes if that.

1. Phone up my local Indian takeaway and order a Mushroom Dansak, Onion Bahji, Pilau rice and a Sag Aloo and have it sent to my address.
2. Send a few pictures off your wife with a clipping of her hair, fingernails and a garment of underclothing to my address.
3. Fake a letter from Samsung telling you and the Mrs about a product recall on your make and Serial Number of television and how they can replace it F.o.C (i.e. with your new chosen TV).
4. Leave me in peace.

as long as you don't just throw the telly away then i've no objects to the OP really :) give it a good home if it's a perfectly good TV, but don't just bin it - what a waste!

if your mrs is into saving the planet tell her a new TV will use a lot less electricity so is greaner, and that you can have some of the room back as it's not being taken up by a deep TV then pass the old tv onto a frecycleor something similar company, then your being green in 2 ways

Breaking a pin off of your scart lead sounds like the best safe one...

But I put another vote on just telling the missus.

pull really hard on the power lead till the outer insulation starts to split exposing the wire

"oh look dear! this cant be safe"

I vote for not wasting a perfectly fine TV - opt for the possibility of giving it to a friend while getting yourself a new one. Obviously you need to push for a case of your friend really needing it.

Maybe ask your local hospital's paediatric department if they are in need of a CRT TV, although most hospitals prefer LCD TVs for obvious reasons :<

Regardless of what you end up doing, don't damage a perfectly fine TV please! Find some way of having someone less fortunate benefiting from it!
