From a personal point of view. I have Documents/Music/Pictures/Downloads re-directed to a decent mechanical HD. Other than that, I use it as any other drive. Not too sure that there is really that much you can do anyway. Though I shall be interested to hear if there are any serious suggestions.
Tend to agree with the comments about pretty much throwing it away after 3/5 years. So in that sort of time frame, I don't really consider this an issue.
Though slipping slightly (slightly?) off topic... to maintain the drive it tip-top level (performance wise at least). You could consider (as recommended by some folks), to backup up the drive, secure erase and then re-load your backup.
