How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

I really, really wanted the MSI one myself but none were in stock or if they were they weren't available for SAT (yesterday) delivery.

I opted for the Sapphire OC edition as I took a gamble after reading something that, just perhaps, they put the better chips in their premium version. The jury is out but mine is perfect and probably capable of more with a little voltage.

I have been playing BF3 for 2-3 hours straight with my card at 1200/5800 @ 1.176 volts with everything at ultra and HBAO enabled and it hasn't missed a beat.

I am pleased I chose one with a better cooler over stock as this one is quiet and has yet to go over 49% fan speed under auto but leads to temps in the higher 60's gaming and 71c under benchmarks.

There were if you were quick enough, £215 with saturday delivery is what I paid for my MSI, quite a premium but I had no computer without it. Really happy with it!

Had I have known earlier , I'd have gone for the MSI versh meself. Exceptional cooling solution and so far most, if not all, seem to be great clockers.

Mine is the only one so far (it would seem) that isn't living up to the reputation.

Finished an hour or so of skyrim at stock volts and clocks with a peak temperature of 75c.

Also, anyone elses MSI rather loud after 48% fan speed?

Have you tried clocking it yet and if so, how high did it go?:)

Well at the moment it's perfectly stable at 1170/5800 1.115v. I got a bit bored earlier so just decided to play BF3 instead! I'll test it some more tomorrow. New to overclocking so don't really want to go out of my depth, not really sure what voltage is the absolute maximum I should try, and what max I should set for a 24/7 clock.

And to MORE SPEED, mine gets noticeable at around the 55% mark I think. At stock mine hit 59 in benchmarks.

Heres an interesting thing that would appear to against the grain. In heaven benchie, my temps are settled about 60c ish, but when I play a bit of crysis2, me temps are nearly at 80c!
I thought benchmarks were supposed to stress the cards more than games, not the other way round:confused:

There is one explanation. This is a guess, but it might shed some light on this why the whole overclocking story with those new AMD cards is not THAT easy as some might think.

Chances are that powertune is kicking in while you do the benches, means, it clocks down so the card stays within TDP.

This is just a guess. The result, of course, would be that many people are not even aware that their powertune is kicking in and throttling.

If you have CCC, try increasing that "power control" slider to +20% and see what the result is.

So after constant pc crashes, reboots etc that I was blaming on the PSU, I have finally figured out that I was simply putting way to much voltage through my gpu, I was using 1.210v to achieve 1150mhz core 5800mhz mem, when in actuality I can run 1200mhz core/5800mhz mem at 1.172v.

So anybody who's having trouble overclocking, start low on the voltage then build up, it might sound silly and common sense, but I didn't realise till a few hours ago!

Anyway, going to try to get 1210mhz core/6000mhz mem!

If that were the case, I'd have thought a lot more ppl would be noticing this as well. I fully understand about powertune cutting in, but I reckon any voltage reduction while benching would show up in the asus monitoring software, and the voltage on mine remains at the level I set it to. That is, unless everyong here plays benchmarks and doesn't actually use them for games:):D

You guys with the great overclocks,
do your cards have the 7850 boards using only one power connector? Just to clear up some rumors that people might only achieve the good overclocks on older cards which still used the 7870 layout with the 2 power connectors.

Rumours are rubbish. Everyone here is using cards with a single power connector.

My MSI does:

1200/5800 @ 1.15V
1225/5800 @ 1.17V
1290/5800 @ 1.225V

Anyone overclocked the 7870 yet? I couldn't find a thread for it, whenever I do find something people recommend the 7850 lol. I wonder if the 7870 doesn't have the same overclocking headroom that the 7850 gives.

i wonder this card is good for minning btc? can someone please check it for me?

here is mining program (just download and run cgminer) http://www.putlocker.com/file/4D535F8EBE62112C
how much Mh/s 7850 give?

and it posible to set memory very low in asus tweak program? (e.g 150 ,stock=1200),and voltage very low 0.8V maybe 0.9V?
for minning is good when card take little wattage, can someone try undervolt and underclock it and run cgminer? now i`m using HD5770 @0.95V core 770 / mem 200 (stock = 1.2V core 850 / mem 1200)

sorry for my english ;) and thanks for help

Guys can I ask for a quick piece of advice i'm stuck between ordering the MSI 7850 for 210 pounds and massively overclocking it or getting the HIS 7950 for 300 on this week only would I see the 90 pounds difference over the lifetime of the cards playing on one monitor?

Getting 352/360mh/s on each card.

If you can afford a 7950 get a 7950. There's no question is an awesome GPU.

If like me you don't like spending over £200 on a GPU get a 7850 and OC the **** out of it to get the most bang for your buck.

Whats point of getting 7950 when you can oc 7850 (much cheaper) to the former specs with ease.!
