How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Because a stock 7950 OC's equally as well, heading towards 7970 speeds, remember not everyone wants to OC their cards.

If I go with a 7850 I'll definitively overclock it and were the difference 120 pounds i'd certainly go with the 7850 but at only a 90 pound difference (7950 is 300 this week only) to get to a 7970 from an overclock i'm torn on what to do.

Id buy 7850 and use rest of money to treat my girl to night dinner and movies... Shrelock holmes - a game of shadows.

You also cannot guarantee a high overclock either if thats what you intend to do. If you want the performance and have funds, then a 7950 is the way to go.
Like hex, I prefer to with the bang for buck principal most of the time, but due to the low overclocks I'm getting, I think I got less bang and more buck:p
Its purely the luck of the draw, all you can do is hedge you bets as it were.

Edit: Nah mate, wait until "prometheus" comes out and take her to see that :)

The 7950 refs will be £299 as standard now pretty much, the price cut is direct from AMD, its not an OcUK special ;)

I wouldn't expect 7850's to drop in price any time soon either, due to the overclocking potential at that price they are flying off the shelves.

Cheapest 7850 = £181, cheapest 7950 = £299, so just a shade under £120 difference.

I say go with your budget, personally I'm going for a pair of 7970's, my budget allows it and will offer huge performance gains while giving me the option of eyefinity at a later date. Another point that swayed me was a single 7970 matches the performance if not betters of my current CF 6950's. Meaning when AMD drop the ball on CAP's again I won't have to settle for significantly lower performance on a single card.

One things for sure is you won't be disappointed with what ever card you choose, be it a 7850, 7950 or 7970.

One things for sure, at the moment who on earth would bother buying a 7870? ~£30 more for a 7950, ~£90 less for a 7850.

Hi all,

I'm currently running 2x MSI 6850's (860/1000 / 860/1100 respectively @ 1.034). The speed is good and temps acceptable (69 and 75), but I seem to be reaching my VRAM limit when running BF3 on Ultra / Skyrim with various HD texture packs from nexus, which in turn is damaging the gameplay experience, the only solution is to turn things down a notch, but i'm not one for compromises :D

I am therefore considering selling both, and getting myself a single 7850, and then OC the proverbial out of it :)

Will one OC'd 7850 perform as well as 2x 6850's?

Many thanks, Chris.

I would assume the 2 x 6850 in Xfire would stomp all over the single 7850, especially if even mildly overclocked, but I would check it out first.

Two 6850's are faster than a single OC'd 7850 in some things, not in others, but they don't stomp all over it.

Here's my two 6850's:

If you are on the VTX cooler 73 isn't too bad for that voltage, and well within specs.

1150 isn't too bad either, you've still got voltage to play with, might be able to get 1200 yet.
