How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Hi Guys,

For everyone that's having issues with GPU Tweak, you may find that this is an issue with your OS installation. I tried to run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt and couldn't get past 16% before getting an error. Running sfc /verifyonly showed me that there were errors.

As I have access to full versions of Windows software I performed an in place upgrade of Windows 7 SP1 with .... Windows 7 SP1 :) This cleared my SFC issues although I had to reinstall all my patches. I also had to decrypt my SSD, which had been encrypted with truecrypt in case anyone else is running this software.

Edit: A bonus of doing this is that my HP Scanjet 3010 now works in Win7 too :)

do you guys ever get white flashes while running unigine? it's not like an artifacting, it's like i'll see a white flash in the top corner of my screen at random scenes and it is rapid fire and goes away quickly. anyone ever notice this? i even see it at stock speeds...never in the same scene, just random ones, usually ones that already involve white colors.

Okay, so far, I'm up to 1080 for the core and 4848 on the memory at stock volts.

At 1090 GPU recover kicks in in Heaven, although not until near the end of the benchmark, but there was obviously something wrong as the lighting was over exposing as if the sun had gone supernova.

GENIUS

I was having the exact same problem, and you have solved it

Deep Love :)

Hi,
I've been doing EVERYTHING to unlock my 7850, how do i perform this 'upgrade' fix? Do i just boot using my win 7 disk and select some option or just stick the win 7 disk in or what?
sorry about the noob question.
BTW did a SFC scan and it completed without a hitch, so could this fix still help me?

I'd be pretty peeved if someone else out there had been reading this thread, had the same issue and then not posted back with the fix, so no problems.

P.S. Don't forget to run the disk cleanup utility to remove the upgrade files. They're a couple of gigs in size.

Yeah, you're in the same boat as me then. Okay, to perform the upgrade you either need Windows 7 Upgrade disk or Windows 7 Retail disk. If you got a disk with your PC with a sticker on the side then you almost certainly have OEM software, and if you bought an OEM disk you can't upgrade from it.

You also need a disk that contains the same or a higher version of windows to that which you already have installed. So, if your disk is Windows 7 and you have installed Service Pack 1, you will have to uninstall SP1 before you can upgrade.

With those caveats over, yes, pop in the disk, go through the normal Windows in-place upgrade procedure which means click through the screens saying next until you get to one that asks what kind of installation that you want to do to do. You will have two options, Upgrade or Custom. Select upgrade and away you go.

It might help you, however, my problems were pretty apparent, in that I was starting to get BSoDs quite frequently, probably from my system overclocking attempts; which weren't stable all the time. I couldn't get my scanner to work for example, when the driver installation leans on the built in Windows functionality.

just tried MSI Afterburner latest release

Everything that needs to be done with cfg files was done(enabling unofficial, V control and whatnot).
Cant touch anything, even if i try to adjust fan speed it will lagg and eventually freeze.
Core voltage is locked and no data is shown
Power limit (%) is there
core clock and mem clock are there and show correct data, also they can go beyond the 1050/5800 (max is 1120/1560)
Every value in the hardware monitor shows 0 exept mem clock and usage(556/96).

Also did sfc /scannow , got an error, it got repaired after reboot, gputweak still locked at 1050/5800, even after reboots and closing/opening enabling/disabling.

It may be that there is something else that the upgrade does that may fix this. I know that with my particular sfc issue I couldn't fix it with sfc. I also saw mention of the first generation Duqu patch, there was a second fix later, when I was reading doing something screwy to system files and to try and remove it before sfc.

I'm afraid that if you can't upgrade via media, the a wipe may be the only way forward (if you have a spare HDD you could test if this would work first by installing windows to it, before wiping your main drive.)

Okay, 1140/5000 crashes in the last few frames at 1.115v so up to 1.125v and retest

1.125v crashes next up 1.135v
1.135v 1140/5000 completes, next up 1160 core
1.135v 1160/5000 vpu recovery early on next up 1.145v
1.145v 1160/5000 completes, next up 1180 core
1.145v 1180/5000 vpu recover after 25s, next up 1.155v
1.155v 1180/5000 completes, next up 1200 core
1.155v 1200/5000 vpu recover at 102s, next up 1.165v (Asus monitor crashed this time too)
1.165v 1200/5000 vpu recover at 93s, next up 1.175v
1.175v 1200/5000 vpu recover at 106s, next up 1.185v (looks like I've hit a limit)
1.185v 1200/5000 completes, next up 1210 core
1.185v 1210/5000 vpu recover at 118s, next up 1.195v
1.195v 1210/5000 vpu recover at 118s, next up 1.205v
1.205v 1210/5000 completes, I'm going to try for 1220 core

Got some severe graphical flickering and glitching at the 90s mark, so I'm calling it a day at 1210MHz core

Imo thats a bit too much just to get from 1050 to 1200-1250(best case scenario)
I dont really want to go into that much of procedures just for an overclock.
Still weird that GpuTweak and MSI afterburner are 2 completely different issues though.
MSI seems to have a hard time communicating data and receiving it from my card and GPUT is more of a software issue that isnt able to do its ``range enhancement``.

also im waiting to see feedback from someone who has afterburner running good on a non-msi card...

I'd agree with you in that, if all you want to do is have a quick play and get a reasonable OC then it's a faff, but if you want to see how far it will go, and have fun in the process, then it has to be done :D

I've been having fun all morning; see the post above yours :)

This card appears the dogs dangly bits. :D

Am considering replacing my GTX480 SOC as a quieter alternative?

A credible alternative/upgrade or more of a sidegrade?

I can't say, could you see how your card compares to mine in Heaven 3.0?

Also, I can play online BF3 with Eyefinity enabled, 5760x1080, without any noticeable problems for me.

Well, I was having the same problems as you untill around 5 minutes ago. I used a diffferent route to you to get my MSI 7850 TF to unlock.

Deleted all display drivers and GPU tweak.
Cleaned up using CCleaner
Cleaned up using driver sweeper - http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html - select display drivers only to clean up
(Not something I've used before but only have Win 7 and BF3 on this disk)
reboot after steps 2&3 then repeat.
Then followed the steps Pieman or Hex used around page 14/14
Install 12.3 (no ccc)
Install Caps
Install Asus Tweak
Unlock

Now works..:)

Thanks to all for their help and input over the last few days.
LBL

Edit - that version of driver sweeper installs AVG toolbar, didn't see an option to not install it.
