Great, make sure to flash the recovery first before you relock the bootloader, otherwise it won't let you flash it . On the other hand, relocking is not really necessary, OTA updates will still work with the bootloader unlocked. In fact I would be tempted to leave it unlocked, just in case an update messes up something and you need to restore the phone (which happened to my M7 last week...).
Not really, it's more of a flag of it allowing you to flash custome firmware. In fact unlocking the bootloader in the first place is a bit of a hassle due to it requiring the HTC token, might be best to sell it unlocked.
Looking at the M8 guide it seems the only different step was "echo -ne" as it points to a certain part of the memory. Not sure what it would be for the M4. As for getting S-OFF, if it's like the current situation with both the M7 and M8, Sunshine is the only way now which sadly costs $10.
