I need to paint the bedroom window but its directly above the overhang on the picture below, would it be safe to use a multi-purpose ladder with the top section bent 90 degrees and rested against the wall?

How wide is the porch.

Safe options are;
Hire scaf tower
Get scaffolding put up
Day hire cherry picker
Possibly you could stand on the porch roof

Or take the glass out and paint from the inside.

Assuming they are timber you could remove the opening casement / sash and lean out whilst decorating the bit you took off at your leisure

Hire tower is out then.

Scaffolding is likely to be £300-400. Cheapest option is probably hire a van mounted picker for the day and do as much other work as you can.

So I decided to tackle it like this.

Not exactly safe, and not being fantastic with heights I spent my entire time tensed up.

Still have several trips up there to undercoat and paint it :(

I've painted windows over similair roofs just by laying a ladder on the roof, heavy mate at the bottom of it. Then used another ladder to climb up before transferring over to the one on the roof. No heavy workmate, park the van up with the ladder on the roof butted up against the wheel.

If faced with such a situation, I'd probably go with a wi-fi camera and paint brush attached to a long pole I can hold from terra firma, I don't do "heights" very well at all. ;)

I would have tied both sides of ladder to the porch
Would have been a lot safer but the method you used,I would have done same too :D

I'm quite happy to live on the "dangerous" side, but that ladder looks decidedly dodgy!. Either rest a ladder on the porch and stand on the roof to paint, or some other ladder system! I hope you had someone on the bottom to hold that ladder, and the hinge is pretty strong! :p

I fortunately only weigh like 9.5 stone and when I'm up there I tend to keep one foot on the leadwork!
