How would you convert somebody to pc gaming?

So a friend of mine is entirely engrossed in the console world, he thinks xbox is the best and nothing else beats it. He even vowed to buy an xbone.

Recently he had a eureka moment when I blasted the xbox into oblivion with the very best games I could run.

Fast forward two days later: 'I think I might want to get into pc gaming, I was thinking of getting an alienware (I was about to slap his chops there). Its quite expensive though, so I maybe will stick with my xbox.'

What are your guy's experiences with trying to get people over to the pc boat?

I wouldn't try. Each to their own. If he wants to be a console gamer let him. If he wants to give PC gaming a go then help him put together a good gaming rig.

^^^^^

I would never try to convert someone to a different style of gaming. If he wants to change, help him build a great gaming rig. If he wants to stick to consoles, let him :)

Also, if he does take up PC gaming, prepare to provide ongoing support if they aren't tech orientated:D

My brother is a recent PC convert and every time I'm round, I end up modding or updating something. He seems to be getting into the swing of it now though

Bit of a culture shock to some after the simplicity of a console

He will be attracted to the consoles right now sine the next gen consoles are about to be released and buying a console is way cheaper than buying a gaming machine of the same spec.

I suppose you could go into the facts that PC's will outscale the consoles quite vastly and that PC's can be used for so much more than the consoles can, but I think that he needs to do what he wants to do :-)

It sounds like he is already interested in PC gaming so i would show him that he can get a decent PC for a hell of a lot less than an alienware. I am willing to bet that he could get an equivalently performing PC for 2-5x cheaper than an alienware by building a PC himself, and possibly a bit less of a saving by buying a pre-made PC from OcUK.

I would also try to show him the world of modding. Minecraft, skyrim and GTA4 are a few examples of games both on the xbox and on PC which have extensive amounts of mods.

Another thing to try and show him are the indie games and other games from smaller publishers that don't make it to consoles. Kerbal space program, FTL and spintyres are a few that come to mind but i'm sure there's many more.

Also, remind him that he can use a wired xbox controller for most games. While the KB/mouse combo is better in a lot of situations (FPSs most notably) he will be used to the controller and might find the keyboard and mouse off putting at first.

Teach him how to build a PC from scratch and when he gets into it he will get interested in the GPU technology and frame rates and settings. Thats how console nuts get converted is if they get interested in having higher frame rates, 1080p and very high graphics quality. All they know is xbox as playstation and those companies dont promote any interests like that in the customer base ( on purpose )

He stated he was interested but was put off by the assumed cost, If I was to let him have a go a bit more on my rig, then show him how much an actual decent rig would cost, I'm sure he will swing round.

If he is genuinely planning to get a next gen console regardless then now probably isn't the best time to invest a wedge in a gaming PC. In other words why shell out £500+ and then have to drop another £400 on a console in a few months time.

My gut feeling is anyone who hasn't caught the PC gaming bug by now but is a heavy console gamer will likely get sucked in to buying a XB1/PS4 due to the hype / social pressures and thus would be best off sticking with console gaming for a couple of years and see where the PC segment gets to by that point.

A year or two ago I would probably have been all for encouraging them down the PC path but there is a light at the end of the tunnel for console hardware now.

Tell him the system itself may be costly but in the long run the games will be way way cheaper with Steam sales/GMG/Gamersgate/Gamefly and he will also have a lot better looking games.

Show him bad drivers, microstutter, poor console ports, input delay, screen tearing, hyperthreading on or off?, tick flip queue size to 1 etc. etc.

Sure to get him on board ;)

Or just let him get on with whatever he's happy with currently. Who the hell cares. He's playing games isn't he?
