Looks like it on its way out.

Do you have another disk to hand that you can install a free copy of windows on? Also, backup any important files.

Then format the Maxtor disk. Once formatted, use Western Digital Data LifeGuard (or similar) to Write Zeros.

Although this can help disks with bad sectors, it's unlikely it will completely fix the problem. You are much better buying a new disk. Prices are starting to drop again after the floods.
 
Any suggestions on what's a good buy? As if I think about it, this HDD is pretty old and looking at the speeds it's not worth even 'repairing'.
