HP Proliant ML110 G6 - 32GB?

RESOLVED!

I just thought that I would mention that I have successfully got my HP ML110 G6 running with 32GB of RAM.

The ram that I have used is: KTH-PL313E/8G

the G6 that I am using has the Xeon X34xx series processor which does support 32GB of RAM, so make sure that the CPU supports it.

I was also able to use the RAM in a 24GB configuration (2x8 and 2x4), so it is not quite so specific as previously thought.

Nice!
Does your G6 just boot normally and is it recognised by the OS/Hypervisor?
I do have an X34xx CPU so maybe it was my ram being fussy.
I'll need to check if I can try and return if it doesn't work for me.

Something doesnt make sense here!

That RAM is Dual Rank according to all I can see on the net?! Only Quad rank is supposed to work for 32GB

Is it also not the same RAM that goes in the ML110 G7?

Woody, have you tried all four sticks for 32GB or just 24GB?

Also are they Hynix chips on the memory sticks?!

Woody, you hold the holy grail here, Ive been waiting to upgrade to ML110G7 servers because of the 32GB limit, but if all my G6's can run this ram, then I dont need to upgrade to a noisier G7 server at all!

I hope you read this thread.....

Any pics of the RAM boxes or screenshots of the 32Gb in action would be BOSS!

Cheers.

That crucial ram, says its UNBUFFERED.

Does this mean its NOT registered?

According to Crucial

Crucial said:
"Memory spec terms

Unbuffered — Most PCs and workstations use unbuffered memory which is faster than registered memory.
Registered/Buffered — Registered or buffered modules delay all information transferred to the module by one clock cycle. This type of memory is primarily used in servers.
Fully buffered — Designed for next-generation servers, features an advanced memory buffer.

The post above says hes using KTH-PL313E/8G

The specs for this are as follows:-

I cannot work out what is going on here and what spec modules are required!!

We KNOW that KVR1333D3Q8R9S/8G does not work from a poster above, but thats the specification that should be ok??

Totally confused.

I just called Crucial, and that memory (CT102472BD1339) they say is SINGLE RANK!? Erm......

unbuffered RAM is just that, it does not have a buffer chip, registered RAM has the chip and is buffered, sometimes referred to as RDIMMS or FBDIMMS, unbuffered being UDIMMS

As far as I can tell the spec for the ram should be that it has ECC but is not buffered (registered RAM) the only point I'm not sure on is whether is can be dual or quad ranked, from the posts I have seen working, they have all been dual ranked as used by woody - KTH-PL313E/8G

Ive bought dual rank ECC unbuffered and I should have it by tommorrow or more likely Monday so I will be able to tell you for definite then

Vastre,

Did you buy KTH-PL313E/8G ?

The 'E' from what I can work out means its NOT registered, and also the RAM is dual rank according to the internets.

This is getting well confusing, as the Quad Rank is the stuff thats supposed to work but doesnt!

The E denotes ECC, R - registered
I bought some unbranded sticks with Elpida chips, the brand shouldnt make any difference once the right spec has been established

Ok.

Cool stuff.

From what I can tell, it seems to be exactly the same spec memory as people are putting in their G7's.

The irritating thing is, that french link, the guy talks about needing Quad Ranked sticks, and then goes on to link a single ranked stick.

Not really sure what to make of it at the moment.

I see that the KTH-313 NON E (registered version) comes with cool metal protectors over the chips.

Woody can you confirm that KTH-313E/8G is a Hynix branded stick with metal covers?

The spec of this RAM seems to match KVR1333D3E9S/8G too.

EDIT Would be even better if the 32GB DUAL ranked non registered RAM actually ran at 1333Mhz too, but I'd just be grateful if it even works at all.

NO point in upgrading to a noisier G7 if you have a 32GB silent G6.

the bus speed dropping to 800MHz is a restriction imposed by the chipset and not the actual memory sticks

There does not now appear to be a reduction in memory bus speed when installing 4x8GB dual rank sticks

Yeah I know.

I meant that if the modules were dual ranked instead of quad and non registered, perhaps the chipset would be capable of running them at their full speed.

That would be the icing on the cake.

Just to mention, that I myself have been running 32GB of RAM in my ML110 G6!

Been through the forums and quite a lot of conflicting information, so I thought I would share what I know.

The G6 can only accept "E" RAM (ECC) and not "R" RAM (Registered).

I purchased 4 KTH-PL313E/8G sticks... nothing about quad-ranked or dual ranked, so just in single rank configuration.

I have a Xeon x3430 CPU which does support 32GB of RAM (not sure if the Pentuim versions will support 32GB of RAM though).

This configuration that I have works well in my G6. :)

HeyWoody,

Thank you for taking the time to post this information. Its very kind of you.

May I be a pain and ask another question about the RAM?

I require all the RAM sticks to be HYNIX manufactured so they are nice and "matched" so to speak.

On your RAM packaging, can you tell me at the bottom left of the label there are three letters, HYN printed?

I think now Elpida have gone bust its 99% likely to be Hynix.

Now, just to figure out how I can sell my 12 x matched Hynix KVR1333D3D8R9S/4G Sticks!!

EDIT CANNOT WAIT to get my boxes upgraded to 32Gb, when is the right time to buy this RAM, now or wait until after christmas for prices to come down ?
